SUNDAY SCHOOL WOrIc IN THIS STATE TO THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE is >% last ki?V?t 4 Following la tho annual report or tile general secretary, Miss Grace W. Vandlver, to the 37th. annual conven tion of the South; Carolina Sunday" School Association: < - it is with' a deep sense of gratl-. tude to the Father tor His wonderful' leading?to the officers and coinmlt teemen of this association, and to the splendid body of men and "women all over tho State, who are giving qt their time and drain force and money to make the organised, work in this Mate a force for HghtoousaosB. I eomo before you with my. fourth re port. As this report covers but ten months of work, It Is Hot the actual figures that make our hearts bound with rejoicing, but it is the quicken ing or interest, the larger vision, the greater consecration, which has re sulted in improvement along all lines of our work, which cannot: be measured by mere figures. It would take but a single trip. to a country ct vent Ion or a look Into our letter tiles to catch the eager spirit of oar workers, and the earnestness and seal with Which they are doing the . work. The splendid gathering of Sunday school workers at the convention at sumter and the fine Way in .which they took hold' of tho practical sug gestions for increasing, tho efficiency Of our state-wide organization, laid tho foundation for the year's work. There has been a. marked advanr-e in tho kind of conventions held in most Of the counties. There is a-larger grasp of tho meaning of the organised Work and a greater appreciation of methods of work.. County Organization. i Convention have been held in the following counties, Abbeville, Alken, Serkley, rjalhoun, Charleston* Ohe** ter, ciiestcrueld. Cherokee, Colloton, Edgeflold, Florence. Greenville, Hor ry. Jasper, Kershaw, Lancaster, Lau ;ons, Lee, Marlon, NeWberry, Oconee, Plckens, Richland, Saluda, Spartan burg, Sumter, Union .and York. Eight counties: Anderson, Bamberg,? Clar uuden, Georgetown, Groenwood^Qr? arrgebnrgrWUttanjrbprg and. Hamp ton, are organized counties, but did not: get in their conventions^ perhaps because of the-earHness of the suits* Convention date. There are still three counties in which there has never been an organization: Barn well, Darlington and Dorchester, and five counties where the organization is but enough alive to be called an organized ccunty. Those are -Beau f-hrt. DiHoS, Fsl?~o:d, Lb?iagtOii' ??u Marlboro. County Standing? Despite the fact that wo havo been us!3"g a county standard for ss'.y about eighteen months, we now re port ten Bannor Counties and two Front Line Counties. There has-been line work done In the counties in or der to bring tho organization up to those staudarde. The following couft* tins have reached the Banner Stand ard: Berkeley, Calhoun, Chesterfield. 1 lorry, nieb.I-.-d, Saiuda, Sparen burg, Union and York. The first three mentioned, Berkeley, Cs!h??? e?fi 'ihestorfteld deserve special mention becauso of having reached the stand ard in a single year, a* ?il three-of these counties were organised last your. In addition, to the superintendents of the three dtvtstonsi we h?ve had dve departmental .superintendents whoso reports appear at the end of this repart - Rev ? F. W. Gregg, In charge of the Teacher Training work, although a busy* paster, hss done ah excellent service In his department. Mrs. 8. T. Lhfihhni haa handled the Missionary . Department in a most Vital and intelligent way. For the : first tlmo she has put this depart ment phase of our work in a definite and comprehensive way before the Sunday school workers of the State. Because:Of the lack of departmental organization in the counties, the re sults have hot been what Mrs. Lan bam had Wished, but by an excellent leaflet she has prepared, and trough tho use of what organization there wasi and her department in the "Pro moter", stab hss made this depart ment felt mightily In an enlarged vision or thn place the Sunday school has lb the evangelization of tho world. Mr. W. A. Harrison has been a faith ful and untiring worker in the Home] Department work of the n taie. in alditlon to the correspondence and Vromoter" department he' haa at tended county convention, when dob- I slble, and presented the Home De partment. Rev. J. E. "okcr, much to our. regret, has tendered bis resigna tion as Home Visitation superinten dent, because of the lack of time to do the work as he-sees It could be done. Mr. Coker has done the Stato excellent service in this department. Dr. Joseph Quattlebaum haa had charge of the Temperance Depart ment, and has kept that department before the people through his de partment in the "Promoter". As the field work has grown, so has grown the office work. In ten months] we havo sent out 4,280 personal let ters, 1,400 circular letters and some thing like 16.800 pieces of literature. The first of last October. Mat ?. Ma mie b. Matthews, who hss served the association so faithfully for more than a year, resigned her position. We then secured Miss Cora 8. Hol la^, ^ bo s?uOe that nme^nas; car ried on the work of the onice in a most efficient and painstaking man ner. In the months tolas- Hotlatid has been with us, she has shown her interest, not only in nor falthrul sef* Vlee.1 but in the intelligent way which she has handled the work, :\nd her splendid grasp of the situation.
