F On Friday morning at 5.25 o'clock there was a sharp shock of earthquake j . felt here. Houses were shaken, windows rattled, and people scared. At 2.45 p. m. another shock was felt little less strong " than the first. Many persons are of opinion that the shock at 5.26 was as i hard a one as the second ouc on the 31m August. This seems to have been a very c general "quake," extending to Washing- ^ ton, Chicago and points in Ohio. Last Wednesday a crazy negro by the lame of Will Abraina was brought to own. He came from near Donalds and lad gone crazy on the subject of religion, le was adjudged a lunatic, on examinaion by Drs. Mabry & Hil!. and ordered o be sent to the Asylum. On Thursday Constable started with him to Columbia. But at Hodges be succeeded in luding the vigilence of his guard and scaped. Dae West Dots. M. ladison, of Donalds, who is quite a geuleinan, and anxious for you to be pleased n their elegant establishment. Mr. Hayne McDill now seems to be a ixture at Abbeville instead of Dqe Vest. We met at Court the famous bird hooter of Bradley, "Wes Griffin." He illed 3,600 partridges last season, ship>ed them to Augusta, and got ten cents piece. They are known in that rnur;et as Griffin birds, and bring the h?ghst price, lie invariably shoots No. 10 hot, and "never misses." We were well pleased with the drill f the Abbeville Rifles in the Public iquare Monday night. Capt. McGowan aake& an efficient officer, has a fine peron and splendid voice. Solicitor Orr is a fearless, onscientious, able officer of the law, rho knows bis duty and does it well. Mr. Barnwell, the excellent and most fficient cashier of the Abbeville Bank, ays tbey are doing a good business, donday, the 18th, was the busiest day hey have had. Mrs. Marshall keeps a good table and is quite i pleasant and accommodating host. It takes a telegram from three to four tours to go from Abbeville to Due West, jast week a conveyance was telegraphed or from Abbeville to Due West to meet everal gentlemen. The dispatch was ent off in haste. Later the parties set >ut on foot, expecting the conveyance o meet thom. They arrived in Due iVest nearly as soon as the telegram, tnd before the'conveyance could be itarted. We hear frequent complaints ibout telegrams not going through the lodges office promptly. In this case ve do not know that this woo ilame. Mrs. H. P. McGqp is baring a protty md commodious hot-house made. It is trailed with brick and is to bo covered with glass. There is considerable complaint made i>y farmers that their cotton and corn is i>eing stolen from out of tho field. This s a penitentiary offence and some of the I rascals should bo jerked ud. We had the pleasure of meeting Capt W. D. Mars, candidate-eleot to tho Legis-1 lature. Capt Mars is mueh interested in the proposition to lopate the Agricultural School on the De La Howe estate. Ho thinks it a capital idea. It is close to a depot on the S. V. It. R. Col. McCaughrin has again been afflicted. A telegram Friday announced the deAth of little Drayton. Death is a froquent visitor at this household. On last Thursday evening Dr. W. L. Pressly married Mr. Perry Pruitt to Miss Dollie Austin, at the residence of Mr. Wm. Austin. Very soon the Moseley House can claim as one of its frontal attractions a similar nocturnal convenience* On last Tuesday morning Mrs. T. Baker and Mrs. Ettie Baker went to Abbeville C. H., spent the evening and night, aad returned to "the city" the next day. Mr. JVo. H., with a force of hands, is rapidly building the brick store for Mr. J. M. Baker. As this will be the first brick building of any importance put up hero the laying of the corner stone should have taken place with imposing cercmonies. Dr. J. B. Moseley returned home on last Friday from a more than two week's visit to Troy and its vicinity. The dirt that is being dug from the cellar under Mr. Baker's new store is being used to raise the side-walk in front of the Methodist parsonage. I take pleasure in stating that Mr. j Johnnie Horton, one of Lowndesville's most worthy young men, has secured a position on the S. V. R. R. The dust is becoming a very great nuisance. It has become almost as "sarchin" hs kerosine oil. It finds its way into every crevice Mr. D. L. Barnes traded for two Texas ponies, and at this writing is having them exercised. These ponies may bo made profitable for this section, but I doubt it. * We thought that Mother Earth had decided to rest easy for a while; not so. Editor of the News and Courier : 1 enclose you a letter from the United State engineer's office in your city which I think richly deservos publication for more reasons than one, and hope tbst you will coincide with me in'this view and favor it with an insertion in the Netvs ond Courier. Since I first entered Congress, year after year, I reluctantly voted for the river and harbor bills as presented from the committee for approval by the House, not because I disapproved reasonable apropriations for the improvement of our harbors and national streams, but rfiinply because annually there was a "Mingo Creek' or some such other "nigger in the wood pile, in every one of them, who would shovel money into some private individuals pocket, as I believed, rather' than deeper the bed upon a stream that floated our product to the sea, But, I think, the enclosed letter pres enis a case tnat does not belong to the Third district, and was certainly never prrsented by me, for I do not remeber ever having asked a dollar of appropriation foi this or any other creek and there fore, I suggest that the edgineer must go probing about in some other section of the State, loss hilly than the Third district, before he will find his Mingo Creek, or quite as likely, his Clark's Creek, into whose djry^bod water must be dipped from olswhere to establish a stream.
