Man! gap It A special .dispatch to the New and Courier f,rom Georgetown, dated August 'J.6, says : News has just reached here ,of the death of Adjutant and Inspector .General Arthur M. Manigault, which jtook place at South (slund at 4.30 .0 clock to-day. His remains will be conveyed to Charleston by the steamer Planter to morrow and will probably urfjye thereabout 2 1\ M. Manigault, at South Island yesterday afternoon. This aows will be a shock to the State, whose pooplw have .thrice honored Gen. Maningault with ? the important and responsible office which he held at the tiuie of his death, and were about to pronounce an omphalic "Well done, thou good at.d faithful servant,'' by electing him to the same' Jiigh position for the fourth time. Gen. A. M Manigault was born in the city of Charleoton in.1824. After being prepared for college he enternd into ^commercial business in this ciiy, and .continued in that pursuit until the commencement of the Mexican war in 1846. .when he joined a volunteer company and was elected its First Lieutenant. In the letter part of that year ho went to Mexico and was engaged in all the t-ii! i.: ~t. ii n.i it. ti .. oiiiiii's in wiiicii utu ruiiuuLiu i\ugiiueni took part during the war. On his re$hrn from Mexico in 1848, he went into vbusinoss as commission merchant, in Charleston, and remained so employed >untij J.85G, when he inherited some property from his parents in Georgetown county. From that time he followed the pursuit of a rico nlanter until - the late war between the States. At 4he beginning of this war he raised a ..volunteer cavalry company, which he .commanded. He was soon after transferred and placed upon the staff of Gen. ?eauregard as Inspector General, until ?he raising of the first ten regiments of ?ho State volunteer troops for the war He was then electcl Colonel of the 10th Regiment. Thp first six months of the jyar he /c.oftJinapded the first military .district pf South Carolina, under Gens free jPemberton and Itipley. Karly in 1862 Col. Manigaull was /ordered with his command to the West then'under the command of Reauregard and Bragg. His services were con.tinuoua in the western army until the .close of the war. He was twice wounded jhe last being a very serious wound, from whicli he did not entirely recover for a year aftejr.he received it.
