leems to us so self-evident, that the
issertion of it, is hardly necessary.

Col. J. P. Thomas late Superintendent
of the Citadel, has opened a preparatory

superior in South Carolina to Col.
Thomas, as an instructor. lie is high-;
minded and honorable and a safe inslruet
oof youth. We hope he will receive,
cs he deserve.-, a liberal patronage.

The Clintons Freak of a Swarm of
l?ees.
.('apt. W. H Bellinger gave us, a few
days ajio, a graphic verbal account of
the strange and almost fatal experience
that befell a portion of his family last
week. He It id <^oiie to Georgia's Creek
church as a delegate from the IMackville
chinch to the union meplinir Mrs.
Ifcllitig<>r, his son, four years old. and
the infant child, four months ohl, \v<re
with him. On Monday, 3hst nit., they
dined with Mrs. Odom, who lives some
two miles from the church ntul ten miles
from llhu'kville. In the afternoon, Mrs.
Bellinger, carrying her hahy, went, with
the little boj' into the gardan, a hundred
yards from the- house. While they
were quietly walking a bee llew upon
and stung her little son, making a sibilant
noise like the hiss of a serpent.
Quickly in answer to its call, countless
beos came flying from all directions and
attacked the mother and both her children.
Mrs. Jtellinger tried to brush
and bent thum off with her hands but
soon found that impossible. . Telling!
her son to lun to the house she starred
in that direction, but after going a little
way she looked back and found that he
had become bewildered and climbed a
high plank fence, lhinning back she
look him up and carried both children
to the house as quickly as she could.
Captuin Bellinger and Mr. Thomas
Odom met them at the rear piazza and
tried to beat off the attacking bees, but
reenforcemcnts came so rapidly that
they were forced to carry them into a
room and shut the windows before thev
could relieve them from their assailants.
Such remedies as were at hand were administered
and messengers sent for
medical aid, but five hours passed before
the arrival of Dr. Peoples. In the
meantime Mrs. Bollinger and lioth children
became violently ill. Great nausea
ami protracted vomiting prostrated
the sufferers and for some time the life
<>f the little boy was despaired of. By
Mrs. Bellinger's directions a hot bath
and applications of mustard were given
and his, life suved. l)r. Peoples remained
with them all night and the morning
found them out of danger. In all his
practice he says he has never seen worse
cases of poisoning oven from the bite of
the rattlesnake. The bees that made
the attack hod been feeding on the ripe
figs in the garden. They are different
from the ordinary honey bee, having
white heads and golden backs. The
strong nerve and motherly devotion of
Mrs. Bellinger certainly saved the lives

week was a delightful affair, There was
