publication of a letter of mine to (Governor

how, with the letter itself before you
and the narrative jr. yen "? 'lit interview
- had with mo, of the purpose and intent
of the letter to cement more closely I heunion
of the seceding States for the
successful prosecution of Hie war, it
-should ho announced ns "propositi;* to
save the States by dissolving the Southern
Confederacy."
It was because of the conviction present
to me and the Governors of other
States that causes were then operating
which, unless removed, were tending to
the disintegration of tin? Confederacy,
that there was a conourence in the conclusion
to present those matters to the
consideration of the President of the
Confederate States, and by the removal
of them revive the spirit of the people ol
the secedi States. Into any detail or
discussion of these matters I do not intend
to enter. They were and are like
the differences in n family, with which it
is quite unnecessary to trouble or amuse
the outside world. Wether these matters
should have been allowed to exist.
whether they were unavoidable, whether
if they had been removed any other result
would have followed than that which
;befell us in the spring of 18<!5, are now
no longer necessary, or in nty opinion
proper, matters for discussion And
withoutenteringinto them more particularly,
I may say that none but they who,
from their official position, wore cognizant
of the necessity that existed for the
most full understanding of the condition
.of the several States by the I'reMdont of
tho Confederate States, coald adequately
realize the imperative necessity that re-j
quired such undertaking. This was to
be done in the preparation of u communication,
with which I was charged, 10 be
signed by jus many Governor*; of the seceding
States as could be reached and
who would unite in it, to be forwarded
to the President of the Confederate |
States, giving him the most full and particular
statement of all matters which in
our opinion called for his serious cosiderat'.on.
It was not the purpose of any "to
save the States b'y dissolving the Confederacy,"
but, on the contrary, ''to,
save the Confederacy," by making known |
to the President the matters which, it
was feared, threatened its continuance j
:and safety. These matters constitute in I
-part "unwritten history" of thos;> I
times. They belong to the past, and it
serves no purpose, useful or pi >asaut, j
now to recall them.
While many and wide were the differences
in opinion us to the policy ol the
Confederate Government, in matters of
public moment, it is due to those with
whom I had official or personal communication
to say that I did not know one
who w is in favor of "dissolving the Confederacy;"
hut, on the contrary, that the
wishes and minds of :sli were intent or.
its preservation, and willing to make all
sacrifices for tlint. r?ml

Pardon to a Murderer.
The last official act of Governor Porter
of Indiana was the pardon of IVtor
Crawford, known as ".Jake" Crawfoad, a
convict in the Michigan City Prison,
where he is serving a life sentence for a
murder committed sixteen years ago.
When he hud signed the pardon the
Governor said : "I feel as though 1 had
done an act of justice," and he added to
his private secretary. "I want that pardon
forwarded at onco. nmi !.?> /> \r..
IUackledKC [inking $50 from his purse,]
inclose this with it. Tell him that I
would especially request hiirt to keep
mo advised as to his movements."' And
then the Governor gave a story oT most
romantic interest. He said: "The case
f>f that man has worked on my mind
moro than all the other applicants for
pardon that have hecn presented to me
during my entire term. I first became
acquainted with the case three years
ago when he was at Jeffersonville.
Wardon Howard called my attention to
him while 1 was on a visit to the prison.
He had just made an attempt at suicide,
and had a frightful gash in his throat,
1 asked him if he hadanv friends who
might interest themselves in his behalf,
and the question surprised him. He
answered that he did not knew a soul in
tho world outside tho prison, where ho
had been for 13 years. "There is one
man." said ho, sadly: ''who may remember
ine, if ho is still living, but he
ie th? only one 1 know.'' Tho man is a
big, fine looking Fellow, not having the
expression or look of a criminal at all, ^
and I became greatly impressed with
him. lie tohl me of the crime for
which he was n prisoner, and referred
:no to the man mentioned to substan- '
tiate his story, lie had been employed s
o:i a railroad contract, and while resent- ?
ing the abusive treatment of the man in 11
charge of the set lit which he was work :l
ing. he nsod a small penknife with fatal
t'lfect, but wiioont any intention of Kill- 1
ing his adversary, lie was utterly ''
Yieudless, while the man he killed ws.: I!
?vel I known, and tiie case was prosecuted
with vigor by the ablest lawyers in '
Chirk Comity. The result was his con- 11
victien. and lor 10 years he has been a I1
prisoner, lie was little more than a '
boy, and in time was lost sight of en- "
tirely and probably no one outside the
prison even remembered that he had v
ever had an existence. 1 had him removed
to the Michigan City 1'iison. and '
took the trouble to hunt up the man
whose name lie hail given. I finally "
found him and from him heard the sto- "
ry of titc? killing even mere favorably 1
than Cruwfonl had told mo himself. !l
There was no one to apply for a pardon '
for him, l?nt the case appealed to in:; so
strongly that for three years 1 have been
considering whether it was not host to
set him free in the absence of any petition.
I never had any case to work on
my mind as this one did, and it seemed ]
impossible to drive it away. The other night
as I lay dozing iiti'ully. but enable k
!o sleep, that man's figure appeared at 1
the foot of my bed, and 1 cculd see the
face as plainly us I see yours now. J
shut my eyes and tried to think of
something els?\ but. when I opened them '
again there stood Crawford, tin? most
beseeching and reproachful look imaginable
on his face. And there it remained
until I made up mv mind 1
would issue that pardon. Then'he apparition,
if apparition it was, vanished.
-
on my mind as (hat vision. I am lirmiy
convinced tli:it that man has snltWod
enough, ami therefore I set his:? free.'*?

The suit was hy James M. Iiowory I 1

and others, as Commissioners of the,
sinking fund, and was an action to re- |"
cover personal property. Messrs. J'ope f
. C- I*:i?:lcell represented the plaintiff, and , !
Attornoy-Oencral Miles the defendants.
From the exhaustive decision of J'.;<i;re |
Cothran, the following facts arc sum-1
mnrizod. The causc was withdrawn J
front the jury mid submitted to tho I
Court for tho decision of its issues of;
law and fact:
Tho plaintiff brought suit to recover i
posession of two deeds which purported ' i
to he conveyances of certain lands in j
York County. On the " d February 1870,!?
when Charles 1'. Leslie was Ir.isd commissioner
of the State, he nej'otiaU'd : .

! tlie 2d of March, of the *an.e year, he in ! 1
i like manner negotiated wito Lowery for u
the purchase of a second tract in York j c
County comprising l,.'h">."? ncres, for which i .
| the price was to be ijil>?,C?35 cash. Tho
i several instruments of sale wore signed;:
i and sealed by Lowry in the presence of!
' two witnesses, but were not delivered !
to Leslie by the plaintiff, or to any one
! for him, but were retained by him in his
j own possession. Shortly after Lowry
j gave tho (b'eds to Mnj'>r \V. 15. (Julick, .

induccd Gulick to iivu them up, promising
their return tin; next day. They ^
were not returned. When (Julick and '
the plaintiff demanding them, Leslie
pretended to have mislaid them, and
meantime had them -.urreptitiously re
corded iu the registrar's office of York .
County. This fact was not discovered
until a long time afterwards. Leslie retained
the deeds, and they passed from .
his hands as land commissioner into the ?
possession of the sinking fund commis:
sion, the successors of the land commission
and tiio present defendants.
.Judge Colhran justly terms the transaction
a "very crooked" one. A countoi- (
'claim was set up by Hie defendants, but
the .fudge holds that 110 claim of this
kind should be considered 11 _set off to
fraud. Ho observes: "Kven an uquity
.. . mi. tv iiiicti ii|kmi a irnuii, and it j
attempted it must porish upon il;j Ktock." t
As the sinking fund commission has
succeeded in the land cmnmis-don as lite (
heir of this fraudulent transaction, J
Judge Cothran decrees thnt the plaintiff
rccover from the defendant the tcvo
deeds of coiivcvnnco specified and that
they bo delivered up by the defendant;
and in case this specific property cannot
be so delivered up, then the plaintiff
will rccover of the defendant the value t
thereof?$15,199?as his damages. This
is a neat little legacy left the State by 1
the official thieves of Radical days. ^
