The Governor l?ft ths Academy at
?>:45 o'clock ami drove rapidly to the
hotel, entering at (he entrance <?n Twenty-fourth

up to Mr. Cleveland and conversed with

gentlemen then proceeded to parlor No.
83, where wero seated .John Kelly and
lien. Spinola. The greetings between
the gentlemen were cordial, and after a
brief conversation Governor Cleveland
led the way into his private room, where
be remained closeted with Mr Kelly for
twenty-five minutes. At Mr Kelly,
accompanied by Senator Cullcn and
Mr. Spinola, left the hotel, and the Governor
and his party ascended to the balcony
to roview the procession.
At this time the crowd outside extend.ed
clear across the street, fsr back npon
the grass in the square, and from Twenty-second
to Twenty-fourth streetii?
a dense masa of fully 15,(XXI persons.
As Mr. Cleveland stepped npon the

raised a mighty shout, which lasted

of the hotel, fired a salute, the space
for Oring being dangerously small.
For fully half an hour beforo the line
of the procession reached the hotel, the
crowd continued its cheers. Whenever
oue group mined a cheer, the rest all
joined in, and this continued without
cessation.
Around the .Governor were his stall
and members of the national and Stat*
committee and a large number of the
distinguished visitors of the day. During
the delay Mr. Cleveland passed the
time in conversing with those about him.

to him. The crowd meanwhile
stayed patiently and awaited the coming
of the procession, the torches of which

a platoon of tall grenadiers in bearskin

skull eaps of 8<X> Riley Zouave*
Behind the Nicholas Muller Battery of
1,000 strong came another platoon ol
grenadiers in pure white, marching at the
head of 2,000 Red shirts, braided with
bin*, and the Jefferson Battery ef the
Ninth District.
The crowd shouted with delight, and
fkl the glaring advertisement machine
flun* out pictures of Blaine and Cleveland
with the word "Which?" between
them, there wa? a howl of derision (bat

"Honesty is the first issue" and "Remember
1876" danced in the light of
rooster torches which shone and crowed

jackets of the Tenth District, to which

District shared applause with a stjuad

medallions of Cleveland and Hendrix,
