)R. PALMER IN ABBEVILLE.
LONG CASK'S CKNTRNNIAL !
llrlllinnt Xoimou?Kiue AilUreus ?
IliK Crowd.
On Thursday tii^lit of last week, Dr.
t. M. Palmer, of New Orleans, preach?ti
in the AbbovillejPreftbytcrian Church
I'hc house was lilted to its full seating
:r?pacity, and in the aisles were chairs
md benches for the increasing assembly.
)r. Palmer took for his text, these
voids, from 11 Peter, 1st chapter, and
Ith verse: "Whereby are given unto us
exceeding great and precious promises :
liat by these ye might be made partakers
of the divine nature, having escaped
he corruption that is in the world
lirough lust.*'
We do not undertake to give a synopsis
of this sermon because of a lack of
ipacc. Hut the speaker's wonderful
command of language, his copious vocabulary.
his ilear enunciation, his logic
and his familiarity with the Scriptures
combined to make a sermon of unsurpassed
power.
At Long Cane the next day the services
were of a most interesting nature.
I'hey were held in honor of the one
liundredth birth-day of that historic old
rhurch. The people from Abbeville
?nd the surrounding country for many
miles hail assembled till there were
lbout eight hundred gathered together
n the grove about the church where a
itutui nan ueen ererieu anu kcsus provm d.
Over the front of the stand, which
was prettily[decorated, were the words
Hid JigUITB
177 i?W KLCOMK?1884
OiilhcHtnud were Dr. Palmer, Uev.
Messrs. Martin, Pearson, Itushton,
llradley, Dr. Sloan and Dr. Lindsay, and
Mr. Leroi Wilson, who was elected an
(Older in tin* Church in 185U.
Mr. Pearson, the pastor, welcomed
IIiohh present in a few kindly words,
ind spoke feelingly of a member of the
:hurch ninety-four years old, who had
been confined to her bed for four years.
Mr. Martin opened the .proceedings
ivith prayer, after which Mr. W. A.
1'ein(ileton read an interesting historical
sketch of Presbyterianism in-upper Cur>!ina
and of Long Cane Church. Wo
>iad desired to publish this address, but
certain reasons put it out ol our power.
Dr. Palinei arose at the conclusion ol
the reading of the essay and asked tin1
ongrcgation to sing the one hundredth
psalm, which hi? said was Watts' finest
paraphrase, and to sinto tlur tune from
which it should never he dissociated?
Did Hundred, which musical authorities
considered an epic in music.
Dr. Palmer then read from 47tli
K/.ekiel and 22d Revelation. and tool<
for his text the last clause of the !?tli
vorso of 47th K/.ekiel, which is rendered
thus; "And every thing shall live
whither the water Howeth."
The gifted speaker in showing thp apposition
that exists between the prophecy
of Kzekiol and the vision tliat Join
when oil the island of Patmos, wa^
peculiarly happy and forcible. Ir
graphic language and beautiful periods
lie reviewed the circumstances and con
ilitiotiK under which these visions camc
to K/.ekiol and John. They were ay inbolical
and figurative he said. The vra
l?r of life of which they spake in the
the grace and the free and boundless
love of God, which gracc and love bor<
its healing power to whoever accopte<
it. In justice to Dr. Palmer we hav<
refrained from attempting to giv<
any outline of his discourse. Nothin;
but the reproduction in its coinploti
form of the whole sermon could convei
auy proper idea of it. In brilliant con
oeption and imagination, in grace oT de
livery and choice of language it wis tin
finest pulpit oration we ever heard.
At its conclusion Dr. Palmer asked tin
congregation to sing the Marseille
hymn of the Church, "All hail the pow
or of Jesus' name.*'
Dr. Lindsay pronounced lliu hloKsin;
on the vast concourse of people am
Long Cane's Centennial was done.
