Resort Towns.
Why shouldent our people pull for
tourists hotels? Wouldn't they
create business for everybody; the
merchant would increase his sales,
the stable men would be busy aill lhe
time, the farmer would find a ready
sale for his milk, butter, beans,
"taters" roasting ears, inelons, fruits
chickens and ment, the narkt mel
would have on hand at all ineIs
plenty of fresh ment, wbile the rail
road would do a "land office" busi
ness running excursions anrd handling
pienic parties.
With a chain of hotels in this
county like the Toxaway Co. have,
more money would he turned loose,
more land sold and more improve
ments put there on than anything
else that could be suggested. Good
hotels at Piokens and at Table Rock,
under the same management, with a
trolley line botween the two points,
would be a gold mine for the invest
orB.
There is no reason why Pickons,
and the county at large, should not
entertain, and have within its bord
ers, several thousand visitors all the
year round. We are practically in
the same climate as Asheville, and
whatever makes her so attractive
would make Pickens the samo.
Piokens county towns, and especi
ally Pickens, should he full of Lonigi
ana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida,
lower South Carolina and Georgia
people from June to October, with
the imfilux from the North and West
beginning in December iand lasting
until April, thus "ketching 'em a
coming an(d a gwine."
All this could be accomplished if
Pickens would only provide the
means for taking care of the people.
Five thousand visitors coming und
going throughout a twelve months
would mean the addition of several
$100,000 to the county. Asheville
reaps this harvest now A census
was made there the other day of the
visitors and there were five thousand
of them; Hendersonville, 7,000; Sa
luda, 4,000; Tryon, Columbus and
adjacent towns, settlements and re
sort hotels, about 4,000 more -that
was 20,000 people who, stasying toen
days and only spending a dollar a
day, left more money behind than
the entire cotton crop of this county
sells for. Think what these figures
-wean to a cornmunity; and with the
lIght before you, howv can you turn
down any proposition looking to the
development of your comomunity and
putting~money in your pocket.
