Reply to Mr. J. D. Aiken.
Editor Journal:
We beg to reply to the article of
Mr. J. D. Aiken in your paper of
last week which reflected seriously
on the Supervisor and County Com
missioiiers in the matter of the
Martin,Central road. The facts
are that this road was laid out by
the commissioners duriag the last
term of E. F. Looper's administra
tion 1898, and upon coining into
oflice wo endeavored to dissuade
the people from urging its coni
pletion, thinking the roads already
in that neighborhood night prove
su(licient. People interested how
ever threatened to bring action to
compel us to open this road to
travel, and to save a law-suit and
expense to the county we proceeded
to carry out the action binding on
us through a former body of ofli
cers. In opening this road foi'
travel we were only doing what
the law required us to do. We do
not care to notice the insinuations
and remarks of Mr. Aiken.
Respectfully,
L. D. Stephens,
Rabt. Stewurt.
Statement.
''lio indebtedness of Pickens
county including the year 189G to
and including the year 1900,
amounted to about Fourteen thous
and dollars.
We had to borrow $20,000 from
the sinking fund and have paid all
the debt to January .et, 1901, and
have run the county on a cash ba
sis until recently and havo only a
small debt outstanding now.
We had to hold a reserve fund
in order to meet the payments on
the new jail. It will cost us about
$5,600.00 all told.
We hired from the Penitentiary
13 convicts at 13 cents per day.
We have to feed and clothe them.
We have worked about 100 miles
of road during this year and we
want to work 100 miles more by
January 1st, 1903.
WYATT AIKEN FOR CONGRESS
Cokembury, S. 0., Aug. 12, 1902.
To The Sentinelh As a friend of
WVyatt Aiken in this congressional
race in the Third district, I want to
give mny views of the man, as one who
has known him since his boyhood
days. I was raised with him, both
being reared in old Cokesbury, the
old time town of South Carolina his
tory. Both of us received our early
ad..ool training hero. We were boys
toget.''r, and I want to may as a
friend !ni companionship In "ye olden
dlaye" to t Wyatt was always with us.
In those 'arlier years of his life, his
beart and ,-and were, as now, at the
service of a 'riend in trouble, or with
a stranger ia ueed. He was always
On the side of \he "under dog."
School days over, he worked for
our interests in ifter years, when -he
was in a positiod~ to do so. He has
never forgotten sny of us or the old
ties of youth. ,.od attended in his
earlier years th, j old Cokosbury Con
ference school and in later years he
graduated fra~m Young's college in
Washingto:v, D. C.
In the p ,riod of his life when he
nerved ju/ge, jury and witness, as of.
ticiat etr.nographer, he has been a
close obs, errer of the peoples' needs
and ra constant student of public
events. I will venture to say that no
man in this district is more thorough
ly posted on the questions of the day.
Hie is an all round publie spirited
citizen, and is in touch with all the
people of the district.
It has been said, and truthfully so,
that Wyatt Aiken would give the last
dollar he possessed to a poor man in
need and in trouble, but he is not
more generous than he is true to
friend and loyal to principle by na
ture. A man of the people, and his
training and lire experiences have
kept him so. He is the man we want
to represent us from the Third dis
,trict in congre'as.
It has been said that ho would be a
failure as a publio speaker; that he
could not make a speech;that he could
not cope in argument with his as
rioclates in congress. That delusion
has been dispelled. I have heard
him, and I want to say that he can
convince his hearers on the questions
of the day. He has developed into a
strong stump speaker, and he can
take care of himself In any discussion
on any form. But after .all Is said,
It is not the spread eagle orator that
makes things come to pass in con
gre.s or elsehore. 31.
