and the other ollices were filled w iLth

Cham berlain followed in IST-I and
while lie was personally honest, he

Tihe bonded debt of the State hadl in
creased from about six million doil lars
to over twenty-sevi;n million itt these
seven years, notwithstantding the fact
that taxes were increased year by year
until they becamo unbearable. The
[Iouse of Representatives composed of
126 i members in 187-1 5 had about
twenty-four Democrats, about ten

The white people of the State were
becoming very restless under the dom
