A Pertinent Problem.
DIToRl JOURNAL: In behalf of
the projected movement to establish
a method of fire protection in our
budding municipality, may I, a mem.
ber of the committee to canvass, be
allowed a bit of your valuable space
to urge concerted action on the part
uf the property holders and citizens
in general for the carrying out of the
scheme proposed, while the iron is
hot.
This committee, in order to have a
basis to work on, constituted itself a
board of assessment, and assessed all
persons living and doing business
within the proposed protected district
in prop rtion to the amount of prop
erty-stocks, buildings, &c., each hid
for protection. This assessment was
as fair and equable as could be made
without official statistical data, as
was evidenced by the prompt re
sponse of the sterling business men of
the town on the lists of subscription.
Such men met their assessments will
ingly. Others gave as they felt able:
some not at all. Sentiment in fhvor 1
of the plan propoEed was almosl I
unanimous. Of these plans it is not
necessary to speak, as everyone is fi
miliar with them. Five hundred (ol
lars was decined the minimum amnount
necessary to assure the project. The
committee, after a full and thorough
canvas3, can show but -350 sub.
scribed and in prospect. One hun.
dred and fifty more dollars are nced
ed-are absolutely necessiry before
any steps can be taken. Where arc
they to come fromu? Will tLe busi.
ness men of the town allow the preselt
interest so manifest in this laudible
public enterprise-public necessity,
rather-to ebb! Certainly the water
famine, not threatening, but present,
warrants speedy action; and tho
method proposed seemns adequate and
thoroughly practicable. Imagine, if
you will, the outcome of a fire in any
of the biusinosa blocks, with two.
thirds of thc vells on the street dry.
The tire or ganization and its coim
mittees have exhausted their re. t
sources; it remains for tho l-isiness
men to act and that promptly, else
the whole thing will go up in smuoke
(the town too, possilly). Will they
do it?
I may add, in conclusion, that it i
may be accepted as nearly certain
that a material reduction in insur
nuce rato will result from the estalb.
lishmont of this department. V'erb

lBro. Elwell was no ordinary man.
Twenty years ago 1be was pastor of

I was pastor of the Baptist church.
We wore much together, Il e

remember some of his great ser

preach was from the text Hoeb. 4:

p)rotracted meeting, and during the
delivering of the sermnon both
prea her and congregation seemed
overpowered by the presence of
and fearless in the discharge of
duty. Now as a soldier discharged
he has entered into the rest that
remaineth for the people of God.
Farewell, dear brother, till we

I believe in heaven we will shout
