V., oine as a private and the other a lieutenant, followed the fortiliesof war in the battle of Maryland Heights. Stone w'all Jackson, A. P. Hill, Walk eir and N cLaws, names that are o110w utte red with uncovered heads, were prompting privates ad 1officers to deeds of hieroismns that hiave since met and1 challen godl the admniration of the whole world. 'rhe two men in question were from the same county and firm friends. As shot and shell fell fast and thick both of them, each at his respective post of dluty, were shot dcwn by mninie balls and received nearly similar wounds, the lieutenant being hit in the left breast and the private in the right. As the battle waged fierce they were left on the mountain side all night, and next morn ig they were carried to a barn where attention was given them. Both were reported mor tally wounded. After the battle of Sharpnburg they were captu red and become separated. The vicissitudes of wvar and peace, surrendler and reconstruction, did not bring them together. Thirty years afterwards. wvhen those who survived the chances of war meet again to perpetu ate the memory of those men whom death could not dishonor, two men are waiting in the Oaldwell Ihouse at Birmingham for their respective trains. Es prit de corps bringing them in to conversation. One lives in Texas and the other in South Carolina. The Texan also claims this as his native State and gives his name. After a bit of bantering the South Carolini an gives his name, and the next instant the private and lieuten ant of Maryland Iheights are clasped in a hearty embrace, soeing and knowving each other for the first time since they were carried off the battle field and supposed to be mortally wound ed. The pr'ivate was J. M. McGee, of this city. The lieutenant was J. A. Townsend, formerly of Abbeville, but now of Corsicana, Texas. -Greenville News. An Upr.ight Judge.
