WAVWAV.V.V.V.\\V.,.,.,.V.V.V.V.,.V.,.V.V.,.VSV.V.V.,.V..
It is a usual rule that the tobacco 'which has had the best attention
gets the better price when it is sold.
o
August is the greatest vacation month in the year. This year
finds August in the midst of the tobacco season.
o
We must build Conway as a tobacco market and make it so
that home growers will be glad to sell tobacco there.
None except a professional beggar wants to be under obligation
to another for either money or the necessaries of life.
o
The best ways of helping others is to get them something to
do in which they can feel an interest and become independent of
others.
o
Now the time has come when no complaint is heard against
the general stock law Those who hated it so much when it was
first enforced are now pleased with the changed conditions. '
o
No man knows it all about cultivating, curing and marketing a
tobacco crop. There is no time for arguing about it, when a tobacco
crop is to be looked after. Use good judgment and learn all
that you can every season.
o
With the biggest tobacco crop of many years, and less damage
by boll weevils to the cotton which will come on later, this section
is promised a season of prosperity and good business such
as it has not had for some time. 1 '

Nothing will ever take the place of hard work and labor. Socalled

labor.

I . WAKED UP AT LAST f:
It appears that the business interests of the county, especial!:
those of the t'.wri of Conway, have waked c;p at last Lo the importance
of 1 nosting the tobacco markets.
In years gone by when the tobacco industry was nothing, it took
brains and skill, and both time and money to get the farmers
interested in the growing of tobacco in this part of Horry. At
that time there were a few growers in Floyds township and in
green fSea, but the rest of the county depended entirely upon
cotton as a money crop. Then the business men of Conway got
together and organized the Horry Tobacco Warehouse. The
growers of tobacco took more or less of the stock. The Horry
Warehouse had stcokholders among Ihe growers.
As we have said it took brains and skill to wake up the farmers
tb the fact that they had good tobacco lands and that here
was another money crop which they might raise. In the course
of time the growing of tobacco in till parts of the county was an
^established fact and more or less of a success. Other tobacco
warehouses were Organized and Conway had a total of four
warehouses instead of the one with which the industry began.
Other towns in Horrv built a number r?f warpVmncoa

Recently the Tri-State Cooperative Tobacco Marketing Association
was formed taking in many growers in three States. These
associated growers sold under the cooperative plan last year. It
developed that only a portion of the growers of tbacco would join
the association. Some of the warehouses in almost every town
remained as auction or independent houses selling as before on
the auction plan. It was found that in those towns where all of
the warehouses were on the cooperative plan, the business of the
non-cooperative growers went to the towns where they sold tobacco
on the auction plan. This made it necessary for each town
to furnish to the growers both ways of selling their 'tobacco, if
they would get their share of the profits and the general increase
in business that t.he sales of tobacco on the auction 'plan would
bring.
For many years the business interests of Conway did but little
to induce growers to come to Conway and sell their tobacco on
the auction plan. We seemed to be content with the (building of
a few warehouses. Prize houses and houses to rent to the buyers
and rphnnHlprc umro <oii;nri i
.mv,iimncu ainiui inn never duiil. WG appeared
to be satisfied with sitting down with our arms folded
and take whatever happened to come our way without spending
any money or making any effort to influence things toward Conway.
Ay nor and Loris acted pretty much the same way, only
Aynor let all of its warehouses go in on the cooperative plan and
had not a single warehouse selling on the auction plan.

WARNED AGAINST JAP BEETLES 1
A warning against the sending of
Japanese beetles out of the quarantined
area, which includes some N00
square miles in the general region of
Philadelphia and Camden, was issued
recently by the United States Department
of Agriculture. The department
has received several sendings of these
beetles through the mails and fears
.that the insect may be spread in this
way. The sending by mail or otherwise
of dangerously injurious insects,
such as the Japanese beetle, is inconsistent
with quarantine and postal
regulations.
Those who wish to have Japanese
beetles identified should send them t<
the Japanese beetle laboratory, Riverton,
N. J. This laboratory is fullv
equipped to handle this work and is
located within the quarantine district,
