CHAUTAUQUA IS
PROVED BETTEIi
Great Builder of Community
Spirit of Cooperation
LEAVES PLEASANT MEMORY
Brought the People Together
Public Spirit Has Been
Revived
Pleasant memories will linger round
the holding of the Radcliffe Chautauqua
program here last week, using the
magnificient new school auditorium
where there was plenty of room for
the crowds.
For the past seven or eight years
Conway has had this period of enjoyment
in the Spring. Therp have been
some good programs carried out before,
but none of them could compare
with the attractions furnished this
time in the opinion of many who
should be competent to judge.
There is not a doubt but that the
holding of the chautauquas at Conway
during these years has contributed to
the spirit of progress and improvement
of our town. It has caused the
men and women composing our peaceful
and hospitable community to reach
out in their minds after the larger and
better things that may be attained by
us while spending our lives at the
place we all love and want to cherish.
In this way the organization has been
of great benefit to us as a community.
An effort was made this time to get
the people of the county interested in
the enterprise. Personal letters were
sent out by business institutions in
Conway to their customers in the
country, and living in other towns of
the county, inviting them to attend
and enjoy the entertainments with us.
Posters were nut up in many places
calling attention to the chautauqua.
Booster trips were made by automobiles
on the day before the opening.
Printed programs were distributed in
many places.
The entertainments were not held
in the chautauqua tent as was planned
at first. The tent was selected at a
time when it \yas thought that the expense
of the school auditorium would
be almost prohibitive. Later it was
found that the school auditorium could
be used at a reasonable rate for the
lights and actual expense involved.
Then it was decieded to have the
chautauqua in the auditorium.
As soon as the change was decided
upon advertising was carried out to
makp tllis known fn tho Ort tV>of
...... ...... . I ?V v**v OV tliu V
there woalcl l>e no confusion about the
place where they should attend.
The Iiadcliffe organization has succeeded
in making the chautauqua bigger
and better than ever before. This
is said after the show is all over and
all of it has been heard and seen. It is
a bigger community builder than ever.
The people can get out of it just what
they need to get to make them more
community loving and .awaken in them
and keep alive the spirit of community
building and community progress.
The trend of the times now is cooperation
aimed at the common good of
the greatest number. Nothing will enhance
this spirit in the breasts of the
people more than the gathering together
at the chautauqua platforms
and the things they hear said there
that are in line with this modern way
of doing things.

IIORRYTTE DIES
AT A HOSPITAL
Thomas &. Lewis is Survived
by Several Relatives
Here^
Thotnas SI Lewis died in Columbia,
S. C., at the Baptist Hospital, on Wednesday
morning, May 2nd, 1923, following
a severe illness which had attacked
him on the day before'. It is
said that he had been sick for some
time before the fatal attack.
He is survived by two daughters,
Mrs. W. H. Davis, of Columbia, S. C.;
Mrs. S'. N". Gilmore, of Canton, Ohio;
and four* sons, George W. Lewis, of
Cheraw, S. C.; Julian Lewis, of Seattle,
Wash.; and T. Q. Lewis and R. S.
Lewis, of Baltimore, Md. In Conway
he is survived by his two sister, Mrs.
Julia Sessions and' Mrs?SaUie Dusenbury,
widow of the late George H.
Dusenbury; one brother survives him,
Fred Lewi's, of Dog Bluff township, at
the present time but formerly living
near Conway on the farm which is
now occupied by S. A. Smart. His wife
preceeded him in death for a long
number of years. She died while the
family lived on the corner of Fifth
avenue and' Laurel street, at an old
home which has been replaced by the
present home of Mr. and Mrs. James
A. Lewis. Years .ago T. S. Lewis operated'
the leading grist mill in Conway.
It was located on the corner of
Fourth avenue and Laurel street, and
the skeleton of the old wooden build
mg wmcn noused this mill was standing
on that corner until about ten
years ago it was removed to make
room for the building that is now on
that corner. There was also an old
boiler and part of the- mill, including
the mill rocks, which had been used
for many years in producing mear for
the people of Conway and vicinity.
In the later years of life Mr. Lewis
followed the trade of a carpenter, tin's
being: a work which he had followed
to some extent in his younger days. In
time of the war he went to Baltimore
where wages were high. Later he moved
to Columbia where he lived with
his daughter, Mrs. W. H. Davis. He
was living with Mrs. Davis when he
was stricken with the fatal illness for
which he was taken to the hospital
and died the next day.
Funeral services were conducted by
the Rev. Mark L. Carlisle at number
1421 Taylor street, and the interment
took place at Elmwood Cemetery 011
