STATESENATOR
COMES AGAIN
Jeremiah Smith Again Takes
up The Argument on Legislature
Matter
Editor Herald:
I notice in your issue of the 5th
inst., a lengthy article from Mr. W.
A. Prince, the purpose of which is to
place me in the attitude of a demented
invalid, absent-minded, and having no
respect or regard for truth; and th/it
I am unworthy of a seat in the South
Carolina Senate..
All of this, I presume, is intended
to suggest that if Horry County's future
interest is to be Mr
Prince should be promoted to this
position.
Mr. Prince starts out by asking
space for "us," meaning he and Mr.
Carter, but vigorously attempts to
^convince your readers that he does not
live in Simpson Creek township. However,
he cannot dodge the fact that;
at the time of his election he claimed
to be a citizen of Simpson Creek, and
his address is now Loris.
Then he launches out on an extended
review of the bond issue, which was
voted down by the people at the last
election. This matter was fully covered
in my former article of the 15th
of March. The Herald likewise showed
by the records from the County
Commissioner's office that Mr. Prince
was wrong in practically every state-.
ment he made. Now. this would-be
statesman says that he is willing to:

time or space in discussing this past
issue.
He further says that I nromised to

but I still have some self-respect
and some appreciation of the honor
conferred upon me by the voters of
Horry County, repeatedly sending me
to the House and Senate *'or ;he past
20 years. I would indeed be a reprobate
of the lowest type should I surrender
the principles that have j-'ways
controlled me, simply at the behest of
Messri. Prince and Carter, who would
have you believe that they are powerful
factors in shaping legislation in

this dastardly act.
I further notice that they both deny
responsibility for the resolutions
which sought to increase their pay, or
compensate them for over-time. As
a matter of fact, there were TWO
RESOLUTIONS offered in the House,
each seeking additional pay. They
were overwhelmingly defeated. Then
another resolution was offered proposing
to grant additional pay of $2 per
day. The press so stated at the time,
and I presume the records of the
House will show that this resolution
was headed by Mr. Carter, and also
signed by Mr. Prince.
Failing in this attempt to filch the
treasury of the State, yet another
resolution was presented by the same
parties which sought additional com
pensation of $2.50 per day. The face
of these resolutions bore such strong

the manhood of the House rose up
and buried them so deep that further
resurrection was not attempted.
Yet, these jrentlemen deny having
signed the resolutions, and attempt, to
shake any responsibility. Still, they
contend that they ought to have re*
ceived this extra pay. If they are

mi.-, iicuon was a rei lection on them,
their way was open. Under the rules
a "question of personal privilege"
could have been raised and the documents
denounced as forgeries and
slander. We seem_ to find no such
recoixl as this taken by these extremely
honest and honorable gentlemen.
Prince says that while he and friend
Carter were laboring to relieve the
poor taxpayer of the burden of $15.000
the Senator from Horry was
home. Now, Mr. Prince is not altogether
as big a fool as his contentions
seem to indicate. He knows that
when I came home all matters of legislation
had been disposed of, except
the tax bills and appropriation bill.
On both these measures I was "paired"
with Senator Williams, of Aiken,
and my vote was counted the same as
if T had been present.
Mr. Prince makes the assertion that
1 did not want his bond bill submitted
to the people, which on its face is an
outrageous falsehood. If he wanted
this measure submitted to a vote why
did he not incorporate it in the bill,
and I would have gladly indorsed it.
Local self-government and t.biding by
the will of the people is a well-known
hobby of mine.
He further states that last year I
advocated in our road bill nine days
or three dollars. This statement is
as black as anything he has been telling.
In 1921 it was $12 or six days. I
had it changed to $9 or 6 days. Last
year we made it $6 or 6 days. The
last session I passed a bill in the Sen
late and sent to the House making it
$3 or 6 days. Mr. Prince in his superior
(?) wisdom saw fit to kill this
measure. Evidently he presumes that
the road hands are a set of stupendous
fools. He alleges that I wish to
see the road hands work six days at
50 cents per day. As a matter of
pr>rt he knows that no road worker
gets one cent for his labor. The law
requires'that he shall work the, road
**ix days, and my proposition is to allow
him to be relieved of this labor
bv paying the small sum of $3. or
50 cents per day. Mr. Prince's contention
is that he must be forced to pay
the six dollars in case, for good ren
sons, he does not work the required
time. I submit to the road worker the
Justice of my position, and defy Mr.
Prince to deny its correctness.
This matter of days and dollars. T
will admit has been a contention for
' years. But I submit that in this age
of progress, machinery takes the place
nf human muscle, and must be utilized
in rend building as in other industrial
enterprises. It cannot be operated
without money, and the less you
make the computation tax, the more
are likelv to pay and the greater
the amount collected.
By the way, I wonder if it has ever
occurred to your readers, and the voters
of this county, why it was that the
House, during' the session of 1922, cut
the appropriation bill in such a manner
as to seriously jeopardize the
AAl O fVllO ?? O ? 1 " "

others? It doubtless has puzzled a
great many school teachers, trustees
and patrons why, if Mr. Prince was
such a power in wielding legislation
as he would have you believe, why it
is that many of the teachers of today
are short a month's salary since 1922?
But I will not ask for any more
space in this issue to discuss these
measures, or to expose our records.
But I will say to Messrs. Prince find
Carter that I have never deserted the
field of battle while under fire, except
by order of a superior officer. Refusing
to recognize their superiority, I
shall not surrender or desert under
their political fire, although it is
humiliating to have to expose the
political jugglery which is being practiced
at present.
Yours verv trulv.
JEREMIAH SMITH.
