Information Concerning Winthrop's
Budget and Needs.
Numbers of Winthrop's alumnae
have requested that information con*
cerning the budget and needs of the
college be given them. To meet the
request this leaflet is being issued.
Friends of Winthrop everywhere
are deeply concerned about the legislative
support given the great institution
chartered for the higher education
of women.
Note the appropriations for the
past three years:
1920 $416,016.00
1921 398,693.60
1922 373,130.96
The steady decrease in the above
appropriations is striking. This decrease
has been made in spite of the
fact that the enrollment has steadily
increased. Note the increase in students
for these years:
1020 1,096 students enrolled
1921 1,243 students enrolled,
an increase of 147.
1922 1,368 students enrolled,
an increase of 125.
Winthrop is not asking more for operating
expenses this year than
last
Winthrop is asking1 for a modest
appropriation to meet some burning
needs in the way of permanent improvement.
In the thirty-seven years
of the life of the college the State has
invested about $734,000 in the plant.
The improvements needed are:
1. The Teachers' Home.
2. The enlargement of the library,
3. The extension of dormitory
facilities.
The Teachers' Home and Library
Enlargement have been in process of
construction for two years, but all appropriations
for continuing the "work
Has been cut out of the budget by the
Genera^ Assembly, hence everything
along this line is at a standstill and
material purchased for these buildings
more than two years aoro, lies on
the ground deteriorating. The arrhi
tect states that the deterioration is
50 per cent.
Consider the following facts relative
to the burning needs mentioned
above:
Teachers* Home at Winthrop. *
There are now 150 teachers and officers
at Winthrop CoTlege. About 20
of these are men who, with their families,
live out in the coty of Roclc Hill.
Less than 50 teachers are accomodated
in the dormitories where they
live at a cost of $25 per month. The
remaining number, which is a majority
of the 150 teachers mentioned,
must secure board and lodging out in
the city, a very difficult, and exnensive
thing t0 do. Such living expenses are
$50 a mnnth.
Enlargement of Library
The librarv at Winthrop. erected in
1904. cost the State $000,000.00, or
nothinrr.
Student enrollment at Winthrop in

Student enrolment in 1922 is 1.368,
almost three times wlrat it was in
1004. i
The librrry is nov inadeouate to ,

number.
Extension of Dormitory Facilities. ,

CONVICT ESCAPES
The convict, Luther Hardee, >vho
escaped from the county chain Rang
last week, had served nearly all of |
his sentence, imposed on him some
time ago for the crime of forgery. On
account of another charge which is
said to be pending in the courts
against him, and for which he feared
he would be tried and sentenced again,
he took advantage ojf his privileges as
a trusty, and ran away. He had told
that he expected to go to Georgetown
on his way North, where he expected
to hunt work.
At last accounts the officers were
looking for him and had taken steps
to have him apprehended in Georgetown
if he showed up in that ^ity.
