Man Fails to Give Satisfactory
Account of His Actions
Tuesday Morning
f
There was great excitement in a
part of the residential section of Conway
last Tuesday morning when a
negro nvan entered the home of Mr.
S. C. Richardson, with evident evil
intent, as was afterwards developed.
The attempted crime was just after
nine o'clock, stated as being between
nine and nine thirty.
The home is occupied by Mr. Richardson
and three daughters; 'nit all
members of the family were tnvoy
from the house at tlvit time except
one. The face of a negro was seen
as it passed a window. It was not
thought to he a man. It was expected
to be the colored washerwoman
coming in to get the wash. A door
slammed. Passing through to another
part of the house, the bath
room door w.'\s passed and a negro
man seen in the room. He made some
i siern with his hand and noxsihlv *r?nlcf>
and it was realized that the intruder
was not the servant, but a negro man.
While Retting" hold of a pistol the
negro made a break to leave the
house, dropping on the inside of the
door, through which he ran, a c<v.\t
of Mr. Richardson's that he had picked
up.
The matter was at once reported to
the oflicers. It was not known who
the man was, but he was described as
wearing a dark or black suit and
black cap. also wore an overcoat, the
color of which was not recalled.
The sheriff, with I>. W. Cooper, also
I). G. Hinson. of the town police force,
took up the chase after the negro.
Close by the corner of the Dawsey
home, a neighbor, they found a track
which showed the imprint of a rubber
heel. This was in the direction
the negro had fled.
Going around one of the public
roads, that intersect each other in the
northern section near Conway, and
finding no trace of their man, they
were returning along another road or
street near the home of Messrs.
Adams and Collins. Here they met
coming back toward Conway, a negro
by the name of Jim Stanley, who accosted
the officers as they came to a
lvilt and asked for n ride into Conway,
evidentlv not realizing that they had
intended to arrest him as the man suspected
of the crime.
Questioning him, they found that
his answers were li^t satisfactory. He

of Engineer Pitts, where he had talked
to the colored cook at an hour
which would show that he had not
been at the Richardson home. The officers
went to the Pitts home without
Stanley and called the cook out. She
said that she had not seen Stanley
in several weeks. Stanley then saijl
said that she would not tell him this
to his face, so the officers went back
to the Pitts man with the man. Hero
the negro questioned the cook about
having talked to him that morning-,
but she denied that she had. Then he
asked her if she did not remember
seeing two women coming along the
path that morning and that he. Stanley,
had passed along and pulled his

it was him, or who it was as to that
