FINE HKVI.TH wnnir
DONE IN HOKRY
The Conway Civic League is having
the privilege of sponsoring some
very fine health work in Horry County,
done by the State Board of Health
through the Bureau of Child Hygeine,
aided bv Federal funds under the
Sheppard-Towner Act.
About the first 01 November Miss
Laura Blackburn , of the bureau,
visited Conway to discuss the work
with the secretary of the Civic
League. Plans were made and Mis:?
Blackburn returned the fifteenth of
November to begin work. In a few
days she realized the great need for
health work and the enormous task
she had in such a huge county. So
she wrote Mrs. Dodd, Director of the
Bureau of Child Hygiene, and Mrs.
Henrietta Ablard came to assist her.
one nas been instructing a class of
nine midwives at and around Bucks
port, all of them have shown intelligent
interest and have done goo !
work, each member of the class received
her certificate Tuesday afternoon,
Dec, 12, in the Klondike Colored
School. While in this section
Mrs. Ablard has held a baby clinic
at which thirteen were examined.
Mi ss Blackburn, who was in the
county only twenty days held a clink'
at Aynor, where forty babies were ex
amined; one at Horry School, where
thirty babies and fifty school children
were examined. The majority
of these were found to have seriously
enlarged tonsils. A clinic was held
at I/oris. About sixty babies and
children being examined. At Pine
Grove School it was impossible to
secure scales so the big cotton scales
were rigged up with a rope which
had a bag tied to the other end in
which the babies were placed. One
of the men of the community assisted
in the weighing. Thirty-seven
babies and sixty school children were
examined. A large majority of these
children were found to have adenoids
and diseasel tonsils, so tho
wise parents of this community are
planning to have an operative clinic
in the near future.
At all of these clinics parents were
advised to bring diseased children
to the clinic held at Conway Dec.
7th. There ninety-seven children
were examined. Dr. Simmons Lucas
of Florence, was the only visiting
doctor. Dr. H. L. Scarborough, Dr.
J. S. Dusenbury, of Conway; an 1 Dr.
J. S. Rogers, of Aynor, assisted in
the examining. Two baby specialises
were expected but could not come.
Miss Blackburn, Miss Hayes, and Mrs
Ablard assisted the doctors. A committee
from the Civic League served
a delightful lunch to the visiting
doctors, nurses and several interested
citizens of the county. After the
clinic, an organization to secure a
[permanent public health nurse was
formed.
In connection with this health work
a beautiful and instructive Pageant
was given at the Theatre. Miss Biack
burn has organized a class of pracical
nurses at Conway and one at
Wain pee, the instruction f which
Airs. Ablard, who is to remain in the
county fumo time, will be in charge.
The Conway Civic League is very
proud of bringing this splendid work
U> Horry C< unty but more than
proud of the Bureau of Child liyf.;i>

country has a double string of applicants
for sales people's jobs strung
along the sidewalks before theii
stores each day from daylight un
til the doors open for business.
It is not wild buying but heavy
buying which is characteristic of this
year's business. The public in gen
oral is purchasing* sensible gifts but
the buyers are demanding quality
and paying high prices for it.
The cheaper selections will have
their chance later when last minute
gifts are snatched helter skelter l'ron
the shelves and show cases.
In the meantime, a number of basic
industries are in the midst of a lul!,
due to inactivity of demand than to
seasonal causes and the approach of.
the inventory period. Raw wool,
cotton and silk for the moment are in
less demand. Wool is scarce and
mills are supplied for the moment
The cotton mills have ceased their
fwnzied efforts to secure spot cotton,
although many believe the activity of
the mill buying is postponed only un,
til the turn of the year. Silk is hovering
between seasons.
Building has slackened but only
temporarily. This is indicated by the
fact that wages in many cases of the
building trades will be advanced
again 011 January 1st. These advances,
it is interesting to note, up!
ply for the most part to unskilled or
semi-skilled workers rather than to
master workmen. Building materials
are active but with prices still firmly
maintained at previous levels.
Further evidence of the trend of
wages is to be seen in the voluntary
; -a 1 * *
luvicasc ui iwo cuius an nour awarded
to Pennsylvania Railroad maintenance
of way men. This will add
$1,800,000 annually to the payrolls
oT the road. Another development
was announcement by the Union
Pacific of adoption of a system of
wages from 2 to 10c an hour higher
than those established by the railroad
labor board.
These advances were arrived a* by
negotiations with so-called "com
pany unions" and mark determination
of the roads to deal individually in
future with labor questions. This
policy was still further emphasized
by the statements that the Associations
of Railroad Executives would
withdraw from all questions dealing
with labor.
The passing of the authority of
the railroad labor board was forecast
by the recommendation in President
Harding's message to Congress
urging that a labor division
of the interstate commerce commission
be substituted.
The iron and steel output of the
country today is almost at the same
level as last week, although a slight
increase is apparent. This is due
largely to railroad buying, there being
orders for 25,000 railroad cars
m;w unuii iifj;uuauwii.
The automobile industry is slow
ing down a trifle owing Lo year-end
adjustments and inventories. However,
the Ford output is running well
above the 100,000 cars a month and
some other companies are impervious
to the seasonal trend. The Cadillac
Company lor example has announced
that it will run at full capacity
through the holidays.
