HURCHES MAKE
FINE SHOWING
Methodists Have Been Forging
Ahead This Report
Shows
Methodists may well be proud of
the progress made in this community
as will appear from a report made to
this paper by Mr. A. E. Goldfinch, regarding
the progress of the church at
Conway.
Editor Horry Herald:
As one of the Laymen of Horry
C?unty I wish to make a brief r?p?rt
on the progress of the Methodist
Church in our County this year.
Conway Station is now the leading
Station in amount of salary paid to
A Pocf av if V?r* M -l ?? 1
wv ? uowi in miv luauun JL/ismci itnu
in proportion to the population of the
Town of Conway is no doubt the
leading charge in this respect in the
whole Conference.
The Sunday School ranks nearly
one hundred percent on organization
and effective administration. The
average attendance thi? vear has
been over eighty percent. The Sun.day
School enrollment, (note this),
560, church membership 418. All
departments thoroughly organized
under the standard plan of our Conference
Board.
All the charges in Horry County
are in the hands of faithful pastors
(no changes have been mawle at the
recent annual conference, who have
done good work this year as shepherd
of their fields.
Rev. J. C. Atkinson pastor at Conway
for the past two years has been
very much interested in the youiu?
men of the Conference who are serv
mg our circuits here in the county
and has been untiring in his zeal for
the upbuilding of the work of the
circuits. By his able counsel and advice
he has done much to advance the j
work of the Lord along all lines. If
Georgia has any more of his kind to
spare we will be glad to find him a
place for service here.
At Myrtle Beach the Summer
Training School of our Conference
has been established. The fifth session
being held there this past Summer
in our institutional church building.
. The building is so constructed
as to serve as a Sunday School building
for the population at this popular
summer resort and an average
attendance of a! out 100 this past
season is eviden< e of the need of suck
a building. Preaching sei'vices ar >
held in this same building each Sunday
during the Summer and twice 1
month the year round.
Dr. Fletcher Walton of Atlanta,
Ga.t under appointment of our Bishop
served as Special Pastor this past
Summer and did some able and acceptable
work. We know he has laid i
the foundation for greater things.
At Avnor the Horry Industrial ,
School is now operating in its own
building a splendid brick structure |
that any Methodist should be proud
to own some stock in. The reports:
nmue ai oonierence show the work
of this institution and the financial
needs. The Board oi Missions and
the Board of Education are fostering"
and help in the work there but it,
also must have financial aid and j
patronage from the individual church
member, Sunday Schools and classes, (
missionary societies, and others.
President J. D. Brown and hist
splendid corps of teachers are .in 1
shape to give good training to any J
w gill ;.ent in through scholar- i
ships or otherwise. This School is -i I
unit of the great Educational plant of \
the Methodists of South Carolina.

SNME MISTAKES
IN THE RECORD
It appears that the Tobacco Association
may make some mistakes in
picking out the names of those who
had signed contracts to deliver their
tobacco to the co-operative warehouses,
and apparently did not keep
those contracts.
H. B. Singleton, a tenant farmer
living near Conway this past season
ha-d a letter from the association
in Raleigh last week which
caused him to worry. The letter read
as follows:
December 11, 1922
Dear Sir:
The records of the Tobacco Growers
Co-operative Association show
that you failed to deliver any tobacco
to the Association during the recent
delivery period in the South
Carolina Belt.
It is our purpose to institute liquidated
damage suits against all
growers in this belt, who failed to deliver,
unless sufficient cause can be
shown for such failure.
| We would ask, therefore, that you
advise us immediately, if theie is any
reason for >our failure to deliver toI
A il. A * ' *
mu;co u) trie Association in accordance
with your contract.
Address your communication to
Burgess & Joyner, Raleigh, N. C., attention
of J. D. Foster.
Very truly yours,
BURGESS & JOYNER.
The fact is that Singleton delivered
all the tobacco that lie raised a4:
the warehouse in Conway.
He delivered it, however, in the
name of himself and his landlor!
i who held a mortgage over the weed.
I This is simply a case where th*"1
I record, as kopt of this sale, does nor
| disclose complete information.
It is evident that some inquiry
should be made regarding the landlord
and tenant sales thus made.

commenting on Judge Cord's statement.
"The beginners and the experienced

MIGHXBE "FLU"

Modified Form of

HEALTH OFFICE WORRIED
So Far no Deaths Have Been
Reported in This Part
of The State
The "flu" has been prevalent in
this county for several weeks past?
if it is the "flu."
The truth is that it may not be
mi ore than common colds, che same
kind from which the people have suffered.
more or less, for all time past.

it has given no little trouble to the
health department of the State. Doctors
of experience such as are at the
head of the public health service of
South Carolina could hardly be fooled
in their diagnosis of this disease.
Now, of course, there has been no
special examination of cases as epidemic
in Horry, but those who saw
the "flu" in 1918, and early part of
1D19, have noticed the same symptoms
cropping out in this county this
winter that they saw in those years,
only these symptoms are of much
milder type.
In some neighborhoods of the county
the condition has been such during
the past two weeks that nearly
everybody has been suffering from
either the "flu" or some form of bad
cold. One man who came into Conway
from the Allsbrook section recently
said that there was sickness at
nearly every home on the way down
here. Reports from other parts of
the county are to about the same effect.
The situation may be greatly
improved by this time, but there are
still cases of these severe colds de*
vol oping.
The people will never forget the
experience they had with this trouble
in the latter part of 1918, and early
part of 1919. People at that time
were afraid to visit their sick neighbors
least they contract the disease
themselves. Whole families died out
within a few days of each other. Pneumonia
was an e.asy change from the
ordinary cold to sickness that would

time had five children that died within
a few days of each other. It was
no respector of persons or localities.
Some believed that it was a product
of some form of German gvas and
that this gas had become scattered
over this country and attacked each
and every person who had to breath
it. This, of course, was not so.
The situation now is what we are
interested about. If it worries the
State health department, and information
is to the effect that it does,
then it is time to take every precaution
regardless of the thought that it
may not be anything more than a
wuinmon cold.
In Conway the present trouble has ,
'- one the rounds and conditions are j
already much improved.. The happy j
pr.rt about it so far is that no deaths
have been traced to the present
trouble.
