BOY KILLED
BY THE TRAIN
A small boy, hardly more than
three years of age, was killed by the
Atlantic Coast Line passenger train
on the run from Conway to Chadbourn
last Tuesday afternoon.
The accident happened at Privetts,
in this county, a flag station where
the hoy lived with his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Kelly Jones.
The parents were working1 in a
field .nt the time. The conductor saw
something lying down between the
ties just ahead of the train. Just before
the engine reached the spot, the
object got up and it was seen to be
a little boy. The engine passed over
the child before it could be stopped.
When the train was brought to a
stop the child was under one of the

the child to Loris for attention by Dr.
Thomas. It was bruised about the
he.ad and was scarcely alive when arriving1
at Loris. It was intended to
take the child from Loris to the Hospital,
but this proved to be useless
as the child was dead in a short time.
When picked up from under the
train, the little fellow was groaning
and making movements, but was in a
stupor just after that and never got
any better."

clinic to be held at Aynor on Friday,
"December 1st, the day after Thanksgiving.
This work has been undertaken
by the Public Health Service
following efforts of the various organizations
such as the civic league.
The clinic will have the aid of the
medical society.
Mrs. Ed Pace, tine general chairman,
will be present at .the clinic.
The Horry Industrial School and
the Aynor school will put on a children's
welfare pageant in the near
future.
Now be sure to remember the date,
and if Aynor is the nearest point for
taking the little boy or girl to a
clinic, be sure to be there and find
out if there is .anything the matter
with the child's health while there

FARM EXPERTS
MAKE PROGRAM
Scientific farmers and farm experts
meeting in Columbia, at the call of
Governor Harvey, discussed the boll
weevil situation in South Carolina
and as a result of the conference outlined
a definite program to be followed
by all cotton growers in the
State. Cotton can be grown profitably
under weevil conditions, it was
stated, but a small acreage must be
planted, so that rt can be given
close attention. The need for growing
food crops sufficient to care for
man and beast was stressed and the
pinion was voiced that the day of
absentee ownership has passed. The
w)ijta brain is needed to raise cotton
vnder weevil conditions, and the ordinary
negro laborer Is not able to cope
-with the pest unless under white
..guidance, it was said.
The following recommendations to
tiie cotton growers of the State were
adopted unanimously-.
"Destroy the weevils' winter auar
ters by plowing1 under cotton and
com stalks and by cleaning terraces,
ditch banks and other trash on the
farm. Prepare Innd early and thoroughly.
Plant best seed of approved
varieties. Among the best varie-!
ties are Lightening "Express, Cleveland
Biir Boll, Delta Tvpe and (on
wilt-infested land) Dixie triumph.
"Use fertilizer sufficiently, such as
would make a bale of cotton per acre
in an average season without the presence
of the weevil. This will vary
on individual farms. Make side application
of soda early before first
blooms appear.
"Plant as soon as ground is warm.
All cotton in a given community
should be planted at about the same
time (from the first to the middle of
April.)
"Practice frequent shallow cultivation
to keep up fruiting. Practice
thick spacing.
"Practice early square picking if
cheap labor is available. This must
be done verv thoroughly every five
days if possible in order to be effective.
"Definite recommendations on poisoning
are deferred, for future consideration
by this conference until after
the proposed conferences at Washington
has been held to determine upon
the general policy to be recommended
for 1923.
"Develon a fertile ?m1 nc
asset under farming under boll weevil
conditions."

Columbia, where they served as jurors
in the United States Court. They

ALL PRECINCTS
There was a meeting here last
Monday in the interest of spreading
the co-operative plan of marketing
cotton and tobacco and finally to
other crops that are raised by farmers.
Two speakers were sent here for
the meeting. One was Mr. Frierson,
representing the tobacco marketing
.association, the other was Mr. Manning,
of Latta, in the interest of the
co-operative marketing of cotton.
Both made speeches and created a
lot of interest. They told what had
been done so far, showing that great
success had so far attended the initial
efforts at organization.

here, similar to other meetings
in other counties of this section ,was
and is to spread the gospel of co-operation
among the farmers of the
State yi ways that will result in more
intelligent marketing of their products.
It is proposed to spread its circle
and influence by forming locals in
every precinct of the county.
R. B. Glasgow, Corn Page, and E.
M. Meares were present and undertook
to organize their communities.
As soon as possible men of other sections
will be consulted and the thing
made general all over the county.
After that the representatives of all
the locals will meet in Conway and
form a county org-anization.
BAKER LODGED
ON CAR SALE
L. M. Baker, .alias Lamar Baker,
was arrested in the yards of the Atlantic
Coast Line, at Florence, S. C.,
last Friday night, by H. N. Sessions,
special deputy sheriff, under a warrant
sworn out some time ago by
Duke Watts, of Wampee, charging
the obtaining of money by false pretenses
.and having in his possession
stolen property.
The arrest results from a transaction
taking p!ace in March of the
year of 1020, when Baker came to
Conway driving an almost new Ford
touring car. He was offering it for
sale. He offered it to Duke Watts
for the sum of six hundred dollars.
This amount W.atts would not agree
to pay. When Watts told him he
would give him four hundred dollars,
Baker at once agreed and Watts went
away from Conway, thinking that he
was the owner nf a \w\*

car at a price which he regarded .as
quite a bargain.
Two or three months after that it
turned out that this car belonged to
P. B. Byrd. cashier of the Bank of
Hartsville. He came to Conway with
papers in claim and delivery and accompanied
by a rural policeman of
that county. Taking- H. N. Sessions
along with them, and after getting
the papers endorsed by an Horry
County magistrate, the officers and
Byrd went to Warn pee and identified
the car and took it under the claim
aiid delivery papers.
Baker had long since left this section
of the country. It %vas learned
afterward that he had been arrested
in the State of Virginia charged with
stealing a car in Columbia; that he
was found guilty in that State and
probably served a sentence of twelve
months in the penitentiary for the
tnVing of the car in Columbia.
Duke Watts swore out a warrant
under which Baker was arrested in
tne Florence yards last Friday. For
a long time Baker could not he located
by the officers. After paying
the penalty for the taking* of the car
in Columbia, he disappeared from his
old haunts.
In the course of time the deputy
'horifT was informed that this man,
Baker, was in Florence, S. C. Going
to that place last Friday a short
search revealed Baker working* as an
oiler in the railroad yards of the Atlantic
Coast Line.
The prisoner was brought in last
Friday night and lodged in the Horry
County jail, to answer for the
crime of selling ,a car that did not belong
to him.
Duke Watts went with the deputy
to Florence for the purpose of identifying
the defendant.
Before locating the stolen car here
in this count v, Byrd advertised extensively
in State papers. This advertising
finally led to the finding of
the car in the possession of Watts at
Warn pee.
