NASTY INSECTS
DIE AT STILLS
Conditions Here and in Other
Sections Appear to be
Extreme
The filthy conditions told tfliovit as
being found round the whiskey stills
that are frequently being broken up
in this country, are revolting in the
extreme, and it would seem hard to
believe that any person >' decent
tastes could be induced to drink the
product of such places. It is {.bout
the same in the other sections of tho
country where the monkey rum is being
made.
The conditions under which South
Carolina "Monkey rum" is manufactured
and its condition as to purity
is clearly shown by a distillery lecently
^(bized and destroyed by Federal
Prohibition agents E. A. Early
and M. L. Wright in Spartanburg
county These agents report that
they located the plant in the center of
a large briar patch .and found the
beer ready to be run and the plant
prepared for operations. The beer
was contained in three large barrels
and a tub. Upon the approach of the
officers they were greeted by thousands
of yellow jackets, hornets,
gnats and green flies. The agents
state that there was at least a hat
full of insects for each container and
that about half Were drowned in the
beer. No covers had been provided
for the protection of the liquid. Upon
overturning the barrels and tub the
men discovered at le.ast a quart of
magcrots under each vessel. The
stench, of course, was all but overpowering.
The presence of such a variety
of insects in such numbers is accounted
for by the sweet tooth possessed
by insects together with their
natural bent to collect around filth.
Head of the Field Force L. T. McQueen
states that this is not all an
extreme case 'as he has this summer
rut numerous distilleries in which he
has found dead frogs and rats floatin^
about in the beer.
In one day of the session of Federal
Court which convened at Greenrills,
S. C., Judge H. H. Watkins disposed
of forty-three (43) cases in
which the defendants were charged
with violation of the National Prohibition
Act. In sentencing one of the
defendants late in the afternoon the
sympathetic judge remarked that he
noted that the defendant could not
sicrn his name to his plea of guilty.
"Of these who have come before me
this afternoon," remarked the Judge,
"seven hundred and fifty (750) per
cent cannot sign their own names."
Ignorance plays first base in the
game of illicit distilling, rum-running,
bootlegging and even in the use of
"Monkey rum." Ignorance plays an
important role in all forms of lawlessness
but plays a far more important
part in "Monkey rum" business than
in other ordinary forms of crime. In
almost 100 per cent of the cases we
find men follow this business as a sole
means of support and an intelligent
man can find an honest means of providing
a livelihood in South Carolina;
hence, it is not surprising to find tlvit
three fourths of those coming before
the court cannot write their names.

ABOUT LAWNS.
Prof. Newman Makes Timely Suggestions.
Clemson College.?Early October is
a good time to renovate the lawn. ^
This may be done by applying well 'j
decomposed manure broadcast over )
the poorer spots. In addition to this I
an .application of nitrate of soda at
the rate of 100 pounds per acre should 5
he applied broadcast. (
For sowing new lawns in the Pied- i
mont region there is nothing better
than a combination of Kentucky blue i
grass, while clover, and Bermuda <
grass. It takes about 2 bushels of 1
Kentucky blue grass, and 3 pounds of
white clover to sow an acre. Bermu
da roots should be placed in rows 18
inches apart and IS inches in the row.
The soil should then be thoroughly
pulverized by repeated harrowing, and
the blue grass and white clover seed 1
sown, raked lightly and then rolled.
For a (|uick temporary lawn there
is nothing better than Italian rye
grass. It takes about 1 1-2 bushels
to sow an acre.
o
Following the rains of last week
there was some good work done in
dragging the streets and roads. During
the dry period, the streets and
roads had become full of small holes.

WINTERING BEES
CI em son College.?It will soon be
,ime to pack bees for the winter, and
t is important to bear in mind the
'ollowing facts, says E. T. Provost,
Extension Bee Specialist.
Packing cases should be made of
sawdust, dry leaves, or hulls. Whatever
material is used, it should by all
neans be dry.
The hives that are to be packed
should have pood young queens rea:ly
for spring and plenty of stores ol
honey of pood quality.
These facts are important to insure
a pood crop for next season
Farmers' Bulletin 1012 on "Preparing
Bees for "Outdoor Wintering" whicl
may be had free from the Extensioi
Service, gives much good informatioi
on this subject.
