CLEAN SWEET I'
POTATO SEED
i
The habit which sweet potato grow- 'I
ers have of buying seed stock or ?
plants from their neighbors or even s
from growers at great distances is j
causing an alarming spread of seri- j
ous sweet potato pests, according to ?
Dr. C. A. Ludwig, Associate Pathologist,
who advises that the best way [
of insuring clean sweet potatoes for
seed is to save them at home, and
that the best time to select seed is at
digging time. . !
It is true that the various state crop '
pest commissions arc doing their best I
to prevent the shipment of any dis- *
e.nsed material, but their efforts sometimes
fail. The Botanv Division h;is? ;
evidence which, although not conclusive
is very strong that sweet potato
wilt has been introduced into some
nlares in South Carolina in this way
during the present season.
The best way to select seed is on a
liil' porformance basis. Select those
hills which produce a good yield of
the most ideal roots. Any roots from
such hills will produce plants with'
desirable hereditary characteristics.
The small ones are as good as the
large ones and vice versa. But small
potatoes and "strings" culled from the
hulk of the harvest are very undesirable
for seed. Such material ii, apt
to carry all of the disease and bad
hereditary characteristics of the whole
crop.

cannot be made rich by hauling guano

JIM FLOYD HIDES IN SWAMP
At last accounts the negro, John
floyd who, on luoniiay of court week
shot at Nell Davis, and his wife, in an
attempt to kill both of them, was at
large in the wilds of Crab Tree
Swamp, which lies between the Dog,
Bluff Road and the Potato Bed Ferry
Road in Conway township.
Officers have been on the lookout
'or Floyd, but have been *nable to
atch him.
On last Sunday F^lovd sent word to
V. I). Johnson, the rural policeman
that he had not made any threats
against .anyone except his wife and
Noll Davis, and denied that hp hn*
said that he would kill a certain
white man, also his brother and his
wife, and the message stated that lie
wished the officers to understand that
he had nothing- .against anybody except
the other negro, Nell Davis.
The message was brought to the officer
by a brother of John Floyd who
is afraid of the desperado and who
saw John on Saturday night. He said
that John had approached hivi and
immediately left again for the
depths of the swamp.
The entire family of John Floyd
has been afraid of ihelr lives e\er
since the shooting and most of them
left home fearing that Floyd would
come there and shoot them.
