Mrs. Mclntyre before her marriage

Cemetery.

It is said that the negro. John Floyd!
who recently shot at Nell Davis another
negro man, and also at the wife
of John Floyd, who is a daughter of
Nell Davis, lias lost his mind. He
has made threats against all of the
members of his family. After the
shooting he hid in the wilds of Crab
Tree Swamp and could not be located
by the officers who went after him
with a warrant.

George Patsalos, the Greek candy
kitchen keeper grumbled at the
amount of taxes he has to pay for
the privileges of running his small
business here. His complaint is not
without reason. lie has cause for
complaint. He hp-> only a small
stock of goods in his shop 'and owns
no other property. Taxes arc entirely
too high, and something must be done
to bring them down to a reasonable
limit.

county, is the New Columbus hotel,
which was opened sixty days ago and
which is operated under the management
of Mrs. Florence Hedrick, of
Conway. S. C.
The building, a two-story brick
structure, is modern in' every particular,
with running water and steam
heat in every room, and it is recognized
as one of the most improtant
adjuncts to the town of Whiteville.
The cusine service is excellent, and
traveling salesmen, who are recognized
the nation over as criterions of
hotels, are patronizing the establishment

Company, came back from Hie hospital
last week, where he remained for
about two weeks undergoing treatment
for a run-down condition which
doubtless resulted from overwork

DEATH OF INFANT
Little Emily Burroughs, infant
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Burroughs,
died at the Burroughs Hospital
last Wednesday afternoon, about
2 o'clock.
The funeral was held the following
norning ??t 10 o'clock at the residence
of Mrs. E. J. Sherwood, aunt of the
little girl.
Rev. J. C. Atkinson, pastor of the
Methodist church conducted the service.
The choir sang two beautiful and
appropriate selections: "When He
Cometh To Take His Jewels," and
"Safe in the Arms of Jesus."
In one corner of the room was a
huge bank of beautiful flowers that
had been sent in by loved ones.

The Woman's Missionary Union, of
'he Waccamaw Association convened
at Union Valley Church October 4th.
and 5th.
Mrs. Edwin Carpenter, first vicemesident
of the State W. M. U., and
Mrs. D. W. Alderman, vice-president
of the Eastern Division were guests
of honor and made the sessions very
helpful by their addresses.
The representation from the various
organizations was very small, but
sent in very encouraging reports
Quite an increase in gifts and service
was reported.
Rev. M. W. Gordon and Rev. A. E
Fu'mer made splendid addresses,
which were enjoyed by all. After each
morning session an especially good
dinner was spread under the beautiful
trees in front of the church, and
was prepared by its members, which
was thoroughly enjoyed by every one
present.
The following officers were elected
for 11)22-23: Mrs. C. H. Snider,
superintendent; Miss Maude Dusenbury,
Supt. of Auxiliaries; Miss Gertrude
Ayres, Associate Supt. of
Bands and Chapters; Mrs. J. E. Beard,
secretary and treasurer.
The next meeting will be held at
Wannamaker Church in June, 1923.

The Blue Ribbon athletic event of
the Pee Dee section this season will
be the football game between the
Furman University and the Citadel,
at the Pee Dee Fair October 19th.
The game will be called at 3 o'clock
in the afternoon, and an hour which
will enable tho?e who want to see
it a chance to come and return home
in the afternoon.
Both teams are leading factors in
the state championship race for football
honors, and all who like football
will see a real game by two of the
best teams in the State.
This is the first college **ame of
footba'l nlayed in this section in years
and if the people patronize it, the
game will he an annual event.
There is not a fan in the State who
has not heard of the great football
machine Billy Laval has at Furman
this year, and the s'ime can be said
of the Citadel "Bull Dogs." the stars
of these teams will be in action at
the Pee Dee Fair on the 10th. Reserved
