WAY BACK WHEN
TIRES SOARED
Two-bit haircuts and dime shaves!
"Them days is gone forever."
Three custom-made shirts for a
five-dollar bill and thick, tender
steaks at twenty cents a pound!
Just a grand .and glorious memory, <
too.
But motorists can find consolation
and a silver lining to the high-price : <
cloud by comparing the tire costs of"'
1010 with those of today. !
"Twelve years ago, the automobile j '
owner paid approximately twice as i
much for a tire as he does now," said 1
Buck Motor Company, ihe local Good- <
year dealers. I
"Are you skeptical? Well, run your i
doubting eyes over these two price J
lists, showing the comparative co-ts i'
of four of the most popular tires sizes 1
in 1910 and 1922:
1910 1922 <
30x3 $23.40 $9.20 :
30x3 ft 21.30 10.65
33x4 51.85 22.35
35x5 89.95 41.05
"This price reduction is only the
half of it. There's double the mileage
also in the tire of today, an'd that's ,
being conservative. 1 know of no '
factor in the economical operation of
an automobile that represents greater
value than the presen* dn v tiro. co?*->
ing half as much as the tire of 191C
and built to give at least twice as
much service.

The efforts of the others got thr

bent radius rod. The windshield of
the car was demolished.
After remaining in tlv* ditch !<>
about an hour a Targe car came and
pulled out the Ford. W ith a few
hasty repairs, the party was alii

The sawmill and grist mill and
other machinery, as well as other
property of E. V. Carter at Loris,
were seized under papers in the '
Sheriffs hands on last Thqtfsddyw W.
C. McKenzie, as Agent of Henry Mullins,
Esq., seized the engine and boil- <
er on last Friday under cnattel mortgage
or bill of sale securing chattel
mortgage of these things, to the
amount of $G00.00. It was staled at
the same time that W. E. Heniford
was holding claim for purchase money ,
against the sawmill of Ca *ter. The
grist mill it was staled belonged to
J. E. Richardson, who had either sold
or leased the machinery to Mr. Carter.
The Sheriff acted under some judgments
recorded at the Courthouse
against Carter and on which executions
had been issued. According to
law, arrangements will be made to
set off a homestead to the debtor
and if there is anything left for credit- .
ors the remainder will be sold.
In the meantime, McKenzie is proceeding
to advertise for sale the en- \
gine and boiler that he seized last ]
Friday. >
The Sheriff also looked over a i
tract of 18 acres of land and on which |
there appears to be two residents. He
also took note of a storehouse that is (
being leased in the town of Loris and
located on a lot belonging to Carter, j

DEAR ADAM.

"Dear Adam", said Eve, "I'm so

bite of this appie and tell me' what
you think of it? And Adam bit, he
always does.
Men have ruled countries, but some
\Voman has always ruled the rulers.
Troy was besieged because of a pretty woman,
and F.den was lost because of
another. It was a woman who fnvn.
saw that Columbus was right, and
pawned her jewels to procure America
for other women.
Think of the trials in "Bringing up .
Father." Yet Jiggs never leaves his
wife. She may throw the Davenport

Men wanted liquor. They lost it.
Women wanted to vote. They got it.
We women may be weak and docile?
'nit we get what we want.
We are not really afraid of mice or
poverty, but we pretend we are, so
that some man will keep them away
from us.
How can we say to Jim, "You're so
strong," and soulfully hand ;him the
poker to beat the carpet with, after he
finds out? We duped Jim for centuries.
That is the secret that women
have known for thousands of years, ~
:md sweetly hidden. Kipling once
tried to give it away, but nobody took
him seriously.
Perhaps Adam wouldn't believe him
either. Beat this and we will give
