IMPERSONATING
PROHI OFFICER
Procures Sum of Money From
Men Under False
Pretenses
UNDER FEDERAL WARRANT
Practice is Growing in Large
Cities Where Bootlegging
is Rife
Federal warrants were issued in
Florence last week for the arrest of
Tillman Fields, Ed Hall, Ashley Liles
and Wilie McDonald, of the vicinit>
of McRee and Betlnme, charging
them with "falsely impersonating
federal officers," l?y which means
they are alleged to have obtained
$190 from \V. II. Gardner, of McBee,
who has made affidavit that these
men got the money out of him by
making him think ?they had arrested
him for distilling whiskey. The warrants
were taken out before United
Q? 1VI 1,1
an investigation made by Federal
Agents J. L. Youmans, G. P. Stacey,
and State Prohibition Constable W.
C. Eichelberger. They were handed
to a deputy United States marshal
at once for service.
According; to the.results which the
investigation is understood to have
developed, these four men are alleged
to have caught Mr*.'Gardner and his
son, E. R. Gardner, and an old negro,
Bill Mitchell in the process of making
a little whiskey about May 11, of
this year. The officers do not seem
to believe that the Gardners were
making the whiskey for commercia'
purposes but, like some of the old
timers?the senior Gardner being
more than CO years of age, wanted
a little alcohol' for home use. The
four defendants are alleged to have
represented ' thefnselves as United
States revenue officers, the alleged
leader, Tillman Fields giving his
name as R. J. Reynolds.
Mr. Gardner has made'the following
affidavit in the case:
I, W. H. Gardner state on oath
that on or about the 11 dav of May,
1922, Tillman Fields, Ed Hall, Ashley
Liles and Willie McDonald came to
me between midnight and daylight
about one half or three quarters of
a mile from my house, met us in the
road and when these men were seen,
my son, E. R. Gardner spoke to
Ashley Liles and asked what he was
doing there at this time of night.
Liles said "the United States revenue
officers," I said to Tillman Fields
that 1 did not believe it. Then Tillman
Fields threw back his coat open
and showed some kind of badge and
then pulled a pistol and said, 'I will
show you what 1 am.' And said 'go
to the still.' I went to the still place.
The still was not there, but the still
was found near the place, brought
to my house and then carried it away
with him. On our way to the house,
Fields said to me, 'If you don't pay
me $150 1 will carry you to the Darlington
jail, all three of you tonight.'
I told Fields that I only had about
$35 in the house. I gave Fields the
$35 1 had and drew a check for $155.
Fields then told Liles to take the still
and go ahead with it.
"Signed W. H. Gardner."
The officers have the cheek mentioned
in the affidavit, which was
drawn on the Bank of Bethune and
was paid, as the record of the check
by the bank shows. It was for $155,
made to R. J. Reynolds and bears the
endorsement of that name.
The authorities got a report of
the frame-up. Immediately the investigating
officers commenced work.
The warrants were the result.
Bogus revenue officers and fake
officers of all. kinds, are the style in
the cities, where bootlegging is rife.
But this is the first case of alleged
fake officers working on moonshiners.
It may add to the terrors of the
moonshiners life but at the same time
it rnav handicap further operations
of ieal prohibition officers.
In addition to the chai?ges of impersonating
federal officers, the quartet
are to be liable for carrying concealed
weapons.
The four men will be held for
preliminary hearing before Commissioner
McDonald, in Florence.

Jackson. All three are former employees
of the Coast Line in the
Florence shops.
When the matter of their violation
of the court's order came up before
Judge H. A. M. Smitn in
Charleston a few days ago, the men
did not appear, but through their
attorney, D. Gordon Baker, of Flor
ence, they entered a denial of the
allegations.
Judge Smith then passed an order
