There was the largest crowd at
the beach on Sunday before hist since
the Fourth of July. There was a
thunder shower in the afternoon
that kept back some visitors from tha

Will the people pass the county
court bill when they vote on the question
in November? There is not a
doubt of the great need of quicker
and more convenient methods of disposing
of litigation.

It would appear that the best tobacco
crops this year have been
grown on high lands that are well
drained. On the low lands the crops
did not stand, and show where the
ruins got in their work.

Melon growers are in need of lower
(freight rates. The melons, in many
instances this year, have not brought
enough to pay the freight let alone
the cost of planting, cultivating and
shipping. The railroads will have
to naul this crop at a lower rate
of freight or else they will soon be i
missing a part of their business, i
Farmers cannot afford to raise the
melons for shipment under the conditions
as they now exist. I

her position which she left when she

year provided by the law for the
magistrates in some places in the
county is not enough to ask a man
to quit his farm or othen work and
serve the people in this important
office. How can the best men be had
for the place at such a salary.

WALTER GUYTON
BADLY INJURED
As the result of a cutting affray
in the Juniper Bay section of Horry
last Sunday, Walter Guyton was
seriously injured by a knife stab in '
the back near the shoulder, also a
deep cut in the thigh which came
near severing the large artery. Frank
Cooper was accused 01 the cutting,
and a warrant was sworn out for
Cooper's arrest,
Guy ton was brought to Conway,
where his wounds were dressed. At
first it was thought that his condition
would be serious, but later it
was not believed to be so dangerous.
As a result of this, Cooper was a!- j
lowed to go on bond. 1
Cooper is the step father of Guy- ]
ton, and no particulars as to the
cause of the row could be obtained.

MRS. SHACKLEFORD DIES.
Mrs. Florence Shackleford wile of
J W. Shacklcford died on .-August 4th
after a lingering illness leaving her
husband and one -ihild surviving. The
interment was at Union Methodist
church. Dr. J. C. Atkinson officiated
at the funeral.
