SLANDERS COME

(Continued from Page 1.)
be falsa we can say at least this much,
that hfe writes without knowing anytiling
about his subject when he says
tlhaJl no great man or thing has eve*
come from South Carolina. There
4Ve plenty of other men outside of
South Carolina who will give 'him the
lie.
There is this about Mr. Merkle's
attitude. He shows that he has Volstead
on the brain. It is Volstead
who has aroused the ire and ill will
of the wealthy Merkle, who resides
in the city of Reading, a place credited
with 108,000 souls. He couples
South Carolina with Volstead for the
reason that Volstead, now determined
to wipe out the evils of divorce, points
to South Carolina as a paragon state,
where there is no stmli thing as divorce
and the scandals which result
from divorce.
It is said t>.at the Volstead law has
"had very liH"Ve to do in depriving the
rich man of Vis whiskey. Tt has made

far as any man should go in his criticism.
Greatness does not depend upon the
number .and size of the cities. The \
greatest men this country ever produced
came from the farms and the
hamlets. The greatest discoveries 1
have been made by men who were ?
isolated from others to greater or less
extent.
These ideas are brought forth from
the pen of Merkle by the realization
that South Carolina is different from r
many other states in its standard of ,
morality. He cannot conceive of a
place where both men and women of
all classes respect the marriage rela- 1
tion. It only shows the low stale of j
the moral and religious life in Penn- ,
sylvania to which Merkle ha;? been
used. Greatness is of many different
kinds, and greatness exists in this
world in many, many different things.
Morality of a high order and the bet
ter way of living are among the great
things that may he found in this country
and especially in SouC\ Carolim:
when our state is compared wi.h
ethers. The ways of life by Merkk
produces such men as Har?y K. Thaw,
the notoriously wicked an.l deprived.
It is impossible for us to see tinadvantages
to human life and happiness
that are to be fouii 1 in the divorce
laws. The\ history of those who
are well known to the piopM ot the
country who have married and beer.
, divorced and then remarried three "i
1 four times over only to break the
bonds time and time again fails to
convince us, and every other reasonable
man or woman that divorce lead
to happiness. They really lead oi-lv
to sin and shame as proved by the
records in any of the states where divorce
laws are in force..
Mr. Mevkle has to do \? itl.ou'c he
whiskey in Pennsylvania unless l.e
?: ?n nuuiugc to obtain and store ?t
contrary to the laws of tlv? United
States, and If he lived in South Carolina
"he would have to get along without
his divorce.

WASHOUT CAUSED
The heavy rain in this section las?
rhursday evening washed out a part
[>f the roadbed of the railroad, near
the Red Hill so that the morning
train from Myrtle Beach was delayed
and could not make its regular schedule
into Conway.
o
FIRST OPEN COTTON
The first open cotton of the season
comes to the Herald office from
the cotton farms of James L. Bell, of
Ut?4> UVI Ut v.
He gathered two open bolls on July
20th and sent them by mail to the
Herald office. His crop is looking remarkably
well.
o
PLEDGES CLOSE:
Candidates will remember that the
time for filing pledges as Democrats
will close tomorrow (Friday) at higU
noon. If this prerequisite is neglected
there will be no way to ^*et in and
make the race. F*ile the pledge by
noontime tomorro.v or you will be
outside the picture.
o
HAS AN EXAMPLE.
This county has had an example of
the effects of poison liquor. There
was a man in this county who ob,
tained some whiskey which appeared
to be good and he proceeded to get
full of it without delay. He had six
or seven convulsions and it took half
a dozen men tx> hold him down in one
place. For nearly a week he was
practically blind.
o
J. S. Motley arrived in Conway one
day last week, having been engaged
as bookkeeper in the business of the
Co-operative Tobacco Marketing Association
at Conway.
