the seacoast. The convention, how- r
ever, has served to clear up all ob- r
scurities of this resort and it is fairly t
certain that henceforth the people of t
South Carolina will not he ignorant I
of this altogether attractive and en
terprising outing place. 1
Myrtle Beach is in the diametrically t
opposite section of the state from the i
Piedmont. It is a good guess that i
it and Westminster are more widely i
separated than any other two points. i
To reach the beach from this section ]
either by automobile or train one must j
travel by way of Columbia. Thence
the railroad route is over the Atlantic s
Coast Line to Marion, while the auto- 1
mobile route is via Camden, Bishop- <
ville and Florence. Were it not for \
the fact that there is no railroad between
Marion and Conway, the next 1
station on the itinerary, Myrtle Beach
would be a justly celebrated watering !
place. But at Marion one must leave ]
the train and board an automobile bus <
for Conway, a distance of about thir- i
ty-six miles. At Conway one may <

again for the remaining distance of
18 miles. The only way in which the
entire journey may he completed by
rail is by continuing the Atlantic
Coast Line journey to Bhadbourn, N.
C., and then backtracking into Conway
over a spur of the line.
It is therefore evident that Myrtle
Beach suffers from the handicap of
inaccessibility, although it is not as
isolated .as one would infer from the i

Conway is a town of abcut
2.000 people that has flourished and

the people of Conway will succeed in

organization that has enlisted the co- I
operation of the entire town in ?'p\.t- !
ting over" Myrtle Beach and inciden- ;
tally Conway and Horry county. How
the town entertained the pre.>s 1
ciation members en route from Mar- (
ion to the beach is a memorable chapter
itself.
At Gallivant's Ferry, where Horry
county's line begins, the editors were
made to feel that they were entering
a totally distinct republic when gales
that were closed wjere opened by the
Palmafesta queen and her maids for
the separate admission of each car.
The queen, Miss Floramay Holliday,
daughter of a wealthy planter-merchant-hanker,
was the center of attraction
as the society editor would
say. To describe her beauty would be
to wax sentimental. Anyway, the effect
was a pleasing one. The "inde
pendent republic" had been penetrated,
with hospitality teeming1 on every
side. Conway gave an entertainment
as lavish as it was unique, consisting
of a luncheon produced entirely by
Horry farmers, prepared by Conway
ladies and served by Conway girls.
The republic prides itself in its "live
?and live long? in Horry" slogan, a
phrase that is not hollow. To use
the language of its publicity agent it
grows everything from queens to
spuds and from the fleet deer to the
lowly 'possum. Editors who have
been preaching diversification and
"live at home" philosophy had a
splendid manifestation of their theory
in the luncheon that was served.
The menu made r.o mention of foreign-made
products except cigars and
cigarettes, and for them Horry grows
the raw tobacco. Col. D. A. Spivey
admitted some time later that another
luncheon adjunct was imported
when he confessed that Horry did not
use persimmons to sweeten coffee.
If Horry's isolation has taught it
how to live at home then isolation has
been a good thing for it. To grow
the necessities of life is bedrock practice
down there. Every variety of
vegetable is grown in profusion, and
the county is rich in poultry, hogs
and cows. The Little Pee Dee and
the Waccamaw Rivers supply a super-abundance
of fish, while the
scarcely untrammelcd swamps retain
many a pound of game. The News
was informed by one of the accurate
citizens of the county that the fur

ter and that furs one year had netted
more than $100,000. Very little cotton
is grown as the tobacco crop is
depended upon principally for cash.
Probably that accounts for the information
ventured by citizens that
Horry has been much less depressed
by the business sink than any of the
adjoining counties. And the future
also is particularly bright, not only
for Horry but for the whole Pee Hoe
section. Dr. \V. W. Long, the agricultural

lieves the section has wonderful possibilities
agriculturally, while Prof. A.
B. Bryan, also of Clemson College,
lolds that once diversification is completed
the section will reap profits
from agriculture that it does not now
even mildly contemplate. A splendid
illustration of what scientific agriculture
in that section can produce i.s in
the case of the Myrtle Beach Farms,
which maintains 00,000 acres and has
reared one of the most lucrative farming:
adventures in the South.
The lumber industry is almost equal
to agriculture in Horry county. Despite
the hew ing of thousands of trees
there is still a copious supply of cypress
and oaks in the Pee Dee and
NVaccamaw swamps. Several large
concerns are located at Conway and
others at various points over the county
sawing the timbers. The industry
is not as active as it was formerly,
however.
Myrtle Beach is, we are informed,
the only beach in South Carolina fully
accessible by automobile. One may

drive into the Atlantic ocean there
without taking the wheels ofT the
ground. When the state system of
highways is developed it will doubtless
he a popular resort for the residents
of this section of the state. The
beach is one of great natural beauty,
with an unobstructed exposure to the
sea. There is a hotel similar in aire
.and condition to the one at Caesar's
Head, besides an annex and bathhouse
available for public use. Various cottages
line the shore. Citizens of
Conway and Florence have recently
built a private clubhouse that has all
conveniences; here families spend the
week and under .a co-operate expense
plan that has been worked out. lhiriny
the hot season the beach draws
many outing parties from territory
100 miles around. The strand is g?';ulual
and smooth and holds the claim
of being the safest surf bathing place
on 'lie Atlantic coast. There were
no aquatic fatuities amonp the fourth
estaters. A cool breeze blew in steadily
from the ?oa, hut whether that
was a regular or a special order could
not he determined by so brief a visit.
It is unfortunate that the Piedmont
section and the Pee Pee section should
not be in closer touch. The State
Highway Commission would do well
to consider the transportation barrier
that exists between the two sections
and develop a highway leading directly
between them. The people of the
Piedmont are in closer communication
with every section of the state tlvm
the Pee* Pee. It would he to the lasting
advantage of hoth sections to he
brought into closer relation. For hoth

is unfortunate that two important

STEALS A CAR
FROM EDWARDS
Grady Kdwards is minus a Ford
car as tlie result of a theft of the
machine at Myrtle Beach on Tuesday
night of last week.
Mr. Ed\var(W went down in his machine
and parked it among the oaks
near the Myrtle Beach Hotel. This
was about o'clock. He spent about
one hour enjoying the breezes and
other means of entertainment at the
resort and came back to the spot
where he had left his car about
10 o'clock. His car was gone and he
has not been able to find any trace
of the parties who took it away.
He spent about fifteen or twenty
dollars in sending telegrams about
the country in an effort to get some
trace of the missing property, but all
without any result at last accounts.
He repioved t lie switchkey with
which Ford cars are provided for
safety against thieves. This did no
gooa in ins case as the thief doubtless
knew how to connect up the ignition
with wires and run the car.
It is believed that the car was taken
l?y about the same set of thieves who
offered stolen cars in this county for
sale early in last year, and which resulted
in several indictments, and one
or two requisitions being issued for
parties living in other st.ates.

little intermingling. but the obstacles
that have prevented friendship and
communication should be removed ere
a few years have lapsed.
One sees evidence of progress
throughout the Pee Hoe section, hist
in agriculture, next in schools and
notably in roads. Scientific t'armi ig
is wreaking many changes and insuring
a prosperity for the Pee Pee that
is certain if the mistake is not made
of going hack to dependence uj on
cotton. Better farming has made bettor
schools and roads possible. The
one room ramble-shack unpaintcd
school buildings have been supplanted
by large brick schoolhouses; night
schools are obliterating illiteracy, and
will in turn make for better farming.
Good roads arc accentuating commerce,
