PUBLIC ALLEY ]
NEEDS GR AVEL
The public alley through the cener
of the main business block is u.^ed ?
is much as the cement sidewalks. c
Within the last ten years the alley '
vas private property. Owners of \
>usiness buildings in this block bought J
he land from the old negro woman N
vho owned it and donated the alley *
o the town for public use. The town 1
>f Conway accepted it just as they *
hould have done.
It would appear that the town of

ots adjoining will not throw in the
unds to pave this alley.
This alley is the worst kept public 1
street in the town of Conway, or in
iny other town, for that matter. At;empts
have been made to fix it up. '
We admit that. What work was done, '
however, was not of the right kind. {
Instead of bringing in gravel to build '
up the bed, or using brick bats or J
concrete, or even the right mixture 1
:>f clay and sand, tlie holes have been 1
filled with sand, which washes away i
in every heavy rain
For aoout half of the way this al- ^
ley rum let ween warehouse.'. Tobacco
leaves un I other trash accumulate
in the alley and rot during every
rainy season, making a stench at
limes that is about sufficient to stop
(he use of the alley. Only ;i few days
ago water ponded round some corners
in the alley by the back door of tlie
United States post office and there
was loft there a green scum. There
was other filth that was left.
Why cannot this alley be placed in
good condition and kept so? Several)
times something has been said about !
the business men doing this at their J
own cost. Why should the property I
owners of just one block pay for this .
when the whole town uses the alley? :
It would not be right. If the whole
town is to use it, then the whole town ,
should pay for building a good i\-. d
bed on ii and this could not be done
in any better way than paying f*>r
the work out of tlie city treasury.
The right kind of material placed
in the bottom and then filled in between
the walls of the buildings will
make it so hard that traffic will not
cut holes in it. Then those who use
th3 alley as a walkway will find much
better irointr. csnecia lv in times of
rain.

Get the job printing done where

jood work in that line may get you
m order or a position or result in
winning you a business connection
:hat will make money for you.
Why use the slouchy kind of printing
tliat is either too heavy with ink
:>r so dim that it cannot he read ?
Often the printer takes the job at
less than he can afford to do it. Instead
of taking care he hurries
through with not enough ink as it is
less trouble to handle the paper that
is not wet with ink. On other occasions
he will put on more ink in his
haste than is really needed for the
work and the result is a smudged up
piece of work that is not lit to be
used.

YE FARME WSSllTE '
The Lord loves a cheerful farmer.
The farmer who lives at home is
at least sure of a home to live in unmortgaged
by Mr. B. Weevil.
There is only one way to have a
good fall garden and that is to st.art
before fall. Now is the accepted time.
Swine mathematics: Good growing

BOTH WAYS HERE
The Conway market will have both
ways of selling tobacco this seasonThis
is the best for the .mowers, in
our opinion. Those who have not
looked into the co-operative way of
selling and have not none into the
association will be able to sell their
product on the auction plan.
The Planters' warehouse, of which
Will A. Freeman is the owner, will
run throughout the season on the auction
plan, while the other warehouses
will belong in the co-operative plan
f selling .
The Planters' warehouse will open
on August L. while the co-operative
warehouses will open on August S,
just one week later.
