They are having fights in several
places over the state about the assessments

that the commission is making mistakes

not be as bad as the old system, but
it is possible for them to he unless
they go into matters very carefully.

Land that is well drained will stand
a flood of rain much better than a
field that is left to itself. A man gets
no credit for having planted .a placc
that is naturally drained. He does
deserve credit for taking a tract of
low land and draining it out so that
it will stand an equal show with other
tracts that have been favored by
nature.
Some men and women who can
write cannot write well and they seem
to l>e ashamed of their handwriting.
They will ask others to write their
names to a note or deed. Often it
is that they will make a mark instead
of going through with the process of
writing- their signatures. This in a
bad habit and one that helps in keeping
up the illiteracy ratio in this
county. Make them write their nam3?
on the club rolls.

happy marriage in Columbia the first
of last week. She is a Conway girl,
the daughter of the late E. Norton,
the distinguished physician of this

Norton lived in Columbia, but visited
friends and relatives here from time

The following account of the wedding

of the common affairs of the club.
It was stated here in Conway that
the running of the clubhouse this season
had been given over by contract
to Mr. Douglas Martin of Florence.
He will manage the guest feature end
diningroom feature of the club under
his contract, the provisions of which
were not disclosed.
The building of the clubhouse is
likely to aid in bringing to the beach
a number of other improvements of
a similar nature.
By the opening day the work of
constructing the piers which reach out
over the surf, all the way from the
strand to the floor of the clubhouse
were finished so that they could be
used.
Numbers of automobiles went over
there on Thursday evening. The sand
clay roads were completed some time
ago so that the cars could drive all
the way down to the strand.
One automobile accident was reported
in Conway the following morning,
a Buick car having been seen at
lhesbeach with the fenders and lights
all stripped. No particulars of the
accident could be obtained here.
To the northward of the new clubhouse
there is a row of the finest summer
cottages ever erected at the
beach, most of them belonging to citizens
of other counties. They nre.all
supplied with artesian water and electric
lights. The clubhouse has a number
of complete baths and there is
running artesian water in every room
of the building. It is a modern club
house in every respect.

made the owners satisfied with the
transaction.
