WAREHOUSEMEN
PLAN FOR YEAR
?
Independents Assemble From
Many Piaces in The
State
(Florence Times)
Independent warehousemen from
several of the South Carolina markets
convened in Florence recently to
discuss their plans of operating during1
the coming season. During the j
fnrnnnnn rnnroenntu) iroc i?-? I
Florence from Mullins, Lake City,
Timmonsville and other places. Florence
was represented in the independents.
"We shall discuss our plans of operating
this season," said J. W. Berber,
veteran warehouseman of Florence,
who has not pledged his warehouse
to the pool and was instrumental
in calling this meeting. "Several
of the markets will have pool
warehouses this year. We expect one
in Florence and understand the representatives
of the growers' association
are dickering to build one here."
The independent warehousemen say
there will be plenty of tobacco outside
of the pool. This must be sold
and they expect to go after their
share of the business. Questions of
opening dates, buyer* on the floors,
outlook for the crop, and other details
were scheduled to come up for
discussion.
Prior to convening the independents
stated emphatically that the growers
this year will have the opportunity of
comparing sales by the pool and by
the auction floor on the same markets.
They aver the auction floor is going
to bring just as good prices as the
pool market.
Members of the Tri-State Tobacco
Growers' Co-operative Marketing Association
learned of the meeting here
and were aroused considerably over it.
They were interested especially in the
competitive methods the independents
might adopt against the association.
