HOMK-TALKNT PLAY
AT MTLL1NS Till USDAY
The following is an account given
oi the play which will be presented
by tho Mullins Pramatic Club at the
Pastime Theatre on Thursday night,
April 0:
"An Old Fashioned Mother," a
drama in three acts, presented by
local talent, under the auspices of the
Older of the Ka^tern Star, at Kirby's
Theatre on Tuesday evening was a
"lO''1. lecided success. It wa - the best
ever undertaken in Mullin> and fro: >
the first the crowded h.?v e v.vis
t!i !ed with the splendid pcvi'or.niiir
pa -ed ;ny professional.- we have
ever had bore.
It would indeed ho a credit for
:'oi e city to put on such an excelled
play. The scenery and general ?,*et
up of t\:' di.Veiont chai-n-'tvM's w; s |
simply wonderful and in one scene'
where the old white haired mother,
sitting b\ her l<>: ely health, be Ml with
grief and sorrow, and with trembline
lips. ,?nd tears courting down liei
cheeks, was singing the dear old ('. miliar
hyeui, "Where Is My Wandering
Hoy Toniuh ?" and from a window
iust to her right you eouM li.s
cern in the twilight a crouching figure
of a rigged, uncouth tra p in
raginu1 snow storm without, peering
vhrough the window at thi lonely
igure by the fireside, as he listened
to the sweet voice singing, "M\ Hear
o'erflow , for 1 love him, ho knows,"
>'ou could see this tramp take on
< *ner of hir. ragged, dirty coat and
si'ontly wipe his eyes.
It was /ill so real that there was
hard'y a dry eye in the audience, and
uk> much praise cannot be given Mrs.
I. 10. Burkholder, who so ably coached
1 bent.
Prom the first, the success of the
play was assured when the name of
.Mrs. Rena Stackhouse appeared on
the program in playing the leading
role of "The Mother In Israel." While
the superh acting of Mrs. Stackhouse
kept the audience in tears, Mrs. Kenneth
McDufVte, as the gossiping old
maid, kept them convulsed with laughter.
In fact each and every one played
his or her part so splendidly that you
could hardly realize that you were
listening to amateurs, and it was well
worth double the price of admission.
Special mention should he made of
Woodward Stalvey, as Jerry, the
country lad, who came in for a great
share of the applause. Boyce Clardy
is good wherever you put him. hut
in the part of love-making he is a
"professional."
Between the curtains two recitations
by little Clarice Burkholder and
Jessie Gilchrist Ham was greatly enjoyed.
Also the vocal and instrumental
numbers by Mrs. Fred W
Truluck and Miss Ruth Sproles, with
Miss Katharine Lewis as pianist.
It is to he hoped that the play wi!'
he repeated so that the numbers that
were unable to secure seats c;m have
an opportunity to see it. ? Mullins
