part of the scheme to put the St.

the waters of the Great Lakes to
work with, there is practically no
limit to what can he done along the
! New York State Barge route."
Air. Olds quoted Governor Miller,
who at tho Atlantic Deeper Waterways
meeting at Savannah, Georgia
recently denounced the proposed S..
Lawrence ship canal project, involving
an unwarranted expenditure
of .$200,000,000 or more, as ''crimnal
foolishness" in wasting millions sadly,
needed for other improvements and i
as an attempt to realize an impossi|
l.lo dream, adding that our tax bur-!
j den would lie increased in order to
(promote what is only an experiment,
end asserted that we should improve
our own ports and waterways
instead of promoting a project in a
foreign country. The governor is
(further quoted as saying that the
cost of the scheme was heralded over
the country as only $250,000,000 and
; that this would include the develop-1
t?vent of 4,000,000 horsepower, which1
lie f-nid "is held out ?vs an alluring'
J bail to the New England States." 11
I would be reasonable in the govevn(or\s
opinion, to add at least twenty-'
. t'!vr> nerrrnt as imr?vnnrfn<l
which would bring the United States'
i half up to more than $150,000,000
,for?u canal 25 feel. deep. He estimated
that it would H>st $50,000,000
1 to deepen the channels and harbors
Of the Great Lakes to a depth of 25
feet so that the share to he borne by
'the United States would amount to
'$200,000,000, which sum is one-fifth
jof the total amount"; expended to
date in improving all our rivers and
'harbors,
On the economic phttso, Mr. Olds
I j (iiioted State Senator Gibbs of New
.York, who said: "It is outrageous at
it Ms period of the financial crisis
' iconfronting the nations that anyone
'' should have the audacity to ask the
Government to spend a quarter of ti
billion dollars so that private interests
