MULLINS TOBACCX
' <r, GET
Wo are glad to notify the tobacco
gfowers that the large tobacco Manufacturers
and export6rs have agreed
to give the Mullins tobacco market
two regular sets of buyers for the
coming* season. This will give Mullins
two auction sales going- on at the
same time with a full corps of buyers
representing the large tobacco; \TVK\iltrfacturers
and ?xporl^i^WH elich
tion sale, of which wd ' feci justly
proud.
Mullins is the first tobacco market
in South Carolina to adopt double
sales.
The tobacco growers of Virginia
and North and South Carolina have
shown a great tendency in the past
few years to sell their tobacco on the
ii;rgo markets, where they find more
buyers and stronger competition.
Owing to the grading and tying of
ioducco it is gratifying to know that
CAR OF SWEETS
OUT OF AYNOR
J. B. McCutcheon, With Shelly & McCutcheon,
Returns From
Florence
J. B. McCutcheon came back a few
weeks ;ago from Florence, S. C., wliere
he arranged with Mr. Young, presi!ent
of the South Carolina Sweet Potato
Association to handle a few cars
of sweet potatoes for our farmers in
Horry.
Through his efforts and interest in
the farmers of Horry he guaranteed
the farmers 75 cents per bushel, clear,
for their potatoes, which showed a
small loss to him on account of high
freight nates, but he hopes that the
market will advance so that he can
~tii 1 get them 75 cents for the next
car and offset his loss also.
W. O. Davis, county demonstrator,
was invited over at 'he time of loadng
to get some first hand information
to give out to the fanners of the
county as to how to grow and market
potatoes as :\ money crop.
Aynor has been shipping potatoes
for the past four or Ove year;-., but
this is the first car that has been
handled by the South Carolina Sweet
Potato Association.
Every county sh)ii!d join ibis association
as it means to them a better
price and bet'.cr market for their
nreilucts. Mr. McCuU'neon is associated
with J. T. Shelley of Aynor
tnd both are willing as all times to
help ihe farmers in anv way that
they can.
SVe hope to have for the "U)22 crop
a curing house ai \yno - that will
take care of the entire crop. We will
ship two or tiiree cars from Aynor
this month and those having any to
ship will call on J. B. McCutcheon
for infornvition.

rH.3 HORRY HERALD, CONWi
) MARKET 1
S DOUBLE SALES
Mullins will have A much longer marketing
period to sell in .and double
sales will give Muliins twice the number
of iobacco buyers, which will
double the capacity of our market,
thus relieving th?. badly congested
conditions and blocked sales such as
. e had to contend' with in the past
| luring t he busy season. We wish to
|;unjN?t?ss uporijybu the importance of
rotfcing your tobacco out early in order
to make good tobacco. It is also
very important that you make sullinent
preparations to grade, tie and
handle- your tobacco nicely, as we
hink goodotobacco will sell well, but
we cannot say anything encouraging
\s to the price of common tobacco
is there is a surplus of common tobacco
on hand now.
Very truly, /
Mullins Tobacco Board of Trade.

SWEET POTATOES
FUIl STORAGE HOUSE
The farmers of Horry County will
be glad to know a sweet potato storage
house will be erected in Conwa\
this summer. While this one house
will not furnish a market for ali the
potatoes grown in the county it
marks the beginning of a new market
in line long needed and a very
promising one. The potatoes cured
in this house will he sold on northern
markets therefore it will he necessary
to have the kind (if potato this
market wants. That is a medium
size, smooth, potato shaped Porto
Rico potato free from cuts, bruises,
blemishes and disease spots. The
market will not buy a mixed lot of
strings, jui ihos, cut or bruised potatoes
therefore the house cannot buy
them from the farmer.
In order to produce the larges;
number of marketable potatoes it is
necessary to start with the eed and
seed bed. The following points about;
bedding should be observed:
1. Plant only Porto Rico potatoes
of the purest strain available.
2. Select healthy uniform seed free
from cuts and bruises and of the desirable
shape.
3. Treat the seed to prevent dis~

in a solution of formaldehyde made
by diluting one quart of formaldehyde
in 50 gallons of water. TliN
solution may be used repeatedly.
Bed potatoes soon after treating.
4. Locate the bed in a southeastern
exposure, good drainage, new land if
possible, and near water.
The practice is usually to bed one
bushel of potatoes for each thousand
plants desired at first drawing. O ie
bushel of potatoes will usually produce
three to four thousand plant*,
at three drawings.
These draws will only bo used to
produce enough vines to plants thej
remainder of the crop. The vine'
cuttii .rs from these draws will make
the largest number of marketable pot;,4oes
of the very best quality potatoes
for the storage house should be
grown from vine cuttings always.

SWEET POTATO NOTES.
It would be well for all farmerr;
to keep in mind the importance of
' i.v,'- oniy goou soo !?- n'ooci neaitny
<!ips for bedding. Throw out all rot-'
ii or out clips and if your potatoes
have shown any tendency to rot thi.c
winter, it would he well to have your J
xeed treated for disease. This you i
can have done by se< ging our farm I
demonstrator, Mr. \V. O. Davis, who
will gladly assist you. The governnent
says it is not a good idea to
use the same bed you used last year.
We believe it is pretty generally
known that the type adopted by the
South Carolina Sweet Potato Association
is the Porto Rican variety.
For this type the association has already
established a fair market, and
this is the variety you shoud use.
It looks now like Conway will have
a curing plant, but a curing plant
will not make a potato market. The
most important factor in the whole
business is to have the farmer grow
a clean, smooth, strictly number one
potato. While our soil is especially
adapted to growing potatoes, we may
as well understand in the beginning
that there is nothing in the business
unless we grow a good article. In
fact, if a curing pant is established,
nothing but number one potatoes can
he handled, because we want to get
our place in the market as producing
only a first class product.
."Let's all get together and make
the Horry potato the best known
brand on the market.
