leaving Conway out for about two
miles to what is known as tho
Quattlebaum place. ! roin thence a
direct route of about a mile, -nost of
"which is practically new road, a
direct course to P.ear Swamp: ihence
? the meanderings of tho old r<vul by
Toddville crossing" Half Way Swamp
on to Klondyke and thence the old
road bed to Port Barrel son Kerry, a
distance of approximately 1 1 miles
covers the old route, while the new or
Greenwood route leaving the point of
divergence at the Quattlebaum place,
goes practically a straight course to
Willow Spring Church; thence the
present road bed via Kvergreen
School House to Greenwood Church, a
distance of 6 miles; thence a direct
course on to the river over the route
already surveyed or any course the
board may see fit to take, bet we
"would suggest a straight course from
Greenwood via Martin Hill to Klondyke
or to a point on the old road
near what is known as the Moore
Place.
Our understanding is that the old
r'o ite has only one straight stretch
>or.e mile, that from the Quattlebaum
place to Bear Swamp, and that
there is a curve on the old route
averaging every 1800 feet, while the
new route can be run practically
straight from Conway to Willow
/Springs Church and straight from
there to Greenwood, and a straight
course from Greenwood to Klondyke
or the Moore Place of about six miles.
In this connection, if you will look at
this soil map, we will call your attention
to the intersecting roads or
highways on the respective routes.
While there are a number of little
roads unnamed crossing the Greenwood
route, we call your attention
particularly to such large roads and
much used roads as the Gates Bay
road, which will come into this
road at Willow Springs Church, opening
up that large section in Middle
Bucks; then the Allen Dew Road,
which crosses the highway at Evergreen;
the Seven-Mile Road that
crosses at Greenwood Church, the
rawiey swamp road that would touch
it there; the Martin Hill road and the
Gilbert road, all of which briny: travel
into this Greenwood route for
miles on both sides of the highway
and open up a section of the county
now practical lv sluit jIV from the
county seat. With a main highway
into which these roads can lead, the
people on these cross ro-ids wiil naturally

The old road, a glance at the map

get their freight from Conway while
the people on the old route have num- 1
fious river landings for frei ;ht adjacent

The primary need of ioad . we t.-'ke

They are a public inve tment made I
bv the public through their agents. >
The public builds them with their i
taxes, and we consider that Urn fir t I
consideration given in tho building of <
new highways should be the greatest <
good to the greatest number.
We ma\ ask that tho hoard "i\'o a
few moments' consideration to the re! 1
ative number of people, taxpayers, accommodated
by the respective route-;. 1
So far ,as the through travel from
Conway to Georgetown is concerned, :
the difference in routes is nothing.
In building a road, however, while ;
the above matter is of primary im- i
portance, we realize that due consider- 1
fction must always be given to distance
and costs. <
Distance.?This is merely a matter
of measurement, and we surmise tlvit
there is practically no difference in
the distance by the two routes.
Costs.? 1.?Sufficient subscriptions
in money and work have been offered
the board by a subscription now on
file, we take it, to practically defray
the expense of cutting out the right'of-way
on the Greenwood route. Hotween
$1,200 and $1,500 have been
pledged in money and work by these
people as an evidence of their interest
and lots more could be pledged
if it becomes a purchasing proposition.
