PETITION FOR
HEARING DENIED
Leading citizens of Bucks township
filed it petition with the county
board last Tuesday and requested the
reopening of the new highway mater.
It appears that only two members
were present, Messrs. DuBose
and Little. The board refused to reopen
the matter, although the showing
made was a powerful one.
The petition wis along the line of
making a change in the route recently
decided upon from the old Georgetown
road to the Greenwood route.
The hoard did not call in the members
of the other board interested in
the matter.

Rufus G. Melson, a native born
Herryite, but now of Cornell, N. Y..I
arrived in Conway last Tuesday to
remain here until about March 1, vis-1
itinp: his old home.
He is now engaged in the real estate
business at his home town and
handles \md which is located in all
parts of the country. He is the eldest
son of the late W. P. Melson, Sr.

FI RM AN ALUMNI
Marion, S. C., Feb. 7.?The Furman
Club of Marion, Dillon and Horry
counties was organized last Friday
night at a meet ins alumni, former
students and friends of Furman University
held in the rooms of the Marlon
Chamber of Commerce. The
gathering was largely attended, .and
by alumni from a class as far back
as 1S75 down to 15)21. Classes of
tlie forty-six intervening years were
represented by men from several
walks of life, viz., teachers, preachers,
bankers, lawyers, physicians, engineers,
farmers, merchants and dentists.
Furman University and Furman
University Alumni Association
were represented by L. iCt. Glenn, the
executive secretary of the alumni association.
MOlSOEJOHNSON
DIES SUDDENLY
.). Monroe Johnson, for many
years a carpenter engaged in work
here, was taken suddenly ill about >
o'clock yesterday morning, February
8th, and expired in a few minutes.
He had been subject to spells of unconsciousncss
for some time but ho
was not believed to be in a serious
condition. Some days ago he was
taken with this trouble at the plant
of a lumber company nut revived
after a few minutes.
He is survived by a wife and a
number of children, some of the
children being very young:.
He is a brother of Italy W. Johnson,
and was about fifty years of
aire.
SPECIAL SERVICES
There will he a special service at
the Methodist Church next Sunday
night in the interest of the American
Jewish Relief fund, Jewish war
sufferers. The other churches have
b^en invited to attend and participate
in the service. They expect addresses
from Marion A. Wright. Esq.,
Col. H. I,. Buck and Dr. J. S. Dusenbury.
The public is urged to attend.

CONWAY TOWN
HAS SPRINKLER
At last the town of Conway owns
a street sprinkler. It arrived last
Saturday and was unloaded from the
cifrs last Tuesday. It is an army used
machine but looks like new. It cost
new $(>00, but cost the town of Conway
only $260.
It was purchased at Camp Gordon.
It has steel tanks, rijrht and left control,
and scatters twenty feet in
