ALUMNAE AND 1 FORMER PUPILS The past weeks have been replete with action in, the field among the alumnae and former students. It is o?; great Mit?'Ost to note how efficiently the Winthrop girl is rendering service to South Carolina. The phase of work through which this service is rendered vary widely from that of a mother tied rather closely to her homo 111 J> I'ftm/lfn nnl<4 nf WnitlrnlAw -V VMIVVV f/UI V V/ I A-JVJ 1 f\Vi IV > or Horry County to that of one leading the social life in 'the busy mart of Charleston or helping to direct the affairs of state in Columbia. In the teaching profession tlie service varies from that of a teacher in an isolated one-teacher school in the mountain wilds of the northwestern part of ?he state or 'n the undeveloped sections of the Sante swamps to that of principle of a lart^e rural graded school, or a county rural supervisor, or head of a collegirfte department in some of our leading colleges of South Carolina. In the field of industry again the service is varied. In the Pee Deo section a YVinthrop girl is directing the management of a large tobacco and cotton farm and another i owns and directs the work of a large greenhouse, lias acres of carnations | which she markets in Washington, I\ n .11 i i - UM i'. v?, as wen as in litis suite. wnerc?ver n Winthrop girl is found she is rendering efficient .service to (homo, to school, to church, and to State. The experiences of the Alumnae Executive Secretary for a day in Marion, S will ,gi ve a f'ne illus tration of tlie last statement. After spending the night in the charming home of a Winthrop daughter, Mi ss Mabel Montgomery, she arose to hear her and her mother discussing the price of cotton ami planning to make a sale. A little later she was invited to go around to the city clioo'i and was told that the superintendent was putting in religious ducation into the schools, each deinmination organizing its work in nnnection with the school. This was. I1" day for the Methodists, to or-1 ranize. Reaching th<^ school buildi <r ,( recess, she was greeted I>y a nimher of Winthrop girls in charge ?f *hc various classrooms, and then lie learned that t he young woman to ! ake charge of this reliirious educaion in the primary department was liss Mabel Montgomery, a Winthrop ill; the one doing the work in the, unior department was Mrs. Lonnie 'Miner, formerly Miss Kstelle Aull, nether Winthrop girl. and if not mis fkeii, Mrs. I,. I). Lide, nee Miss 'leetwood Montgomery, another trinthrop daughter, was to have large of the senior department. ine ot these young women has neen nving as a steward in the Methodist lurch for some time. 'p the afternoon ??t a meeting of le Winthrop Daughters of Marion ounty, when the girls from the vaous parts of the county assembled, icre were discussions pertaining to e development of the crun4y "lid r,r m state. These young women felt :?t the cause of Winthrop College as no partisan one, that it was the so of tho slate of Sout1 C*?ro1a, and hence the way in which tho liege is being hampered by inadelate appropriations and disci imin.itagainst by the General Assembly j discussed and resolutions enrsed urging the gentlemen of the gMatuve to make a iust division the Stale's ivoriey between her u 'g men and her young women icn making appropriations for highodueatioi . This body of young women showed il they were jreat'y concerned also ?1 ho i? -I interest- of Marion 1 )ty. They had learned that there ' nn.v v k 11 on foi; to have the ' of tlic young woman who is 'giving efficient service as rural sc!io<>' supervisor struck from the countv bullet. Tl.ov agreed to ;ee their representatives cmhim-iuhu' this iiuittr*;* ax well as that of' .adequate Impropriations for YVinthrop and T!'0 those men to support heartily nth of these. With this illustration before us, nd ii is only one of many . r.? *rivon, the statement that the VVintiiioj) j^ii*l is rendering efficient sor1-1 to home, school, church, and state L\ ho reiterated with emphasis. H Iifowv cf : . smmmmM done for the higher e&Vbation of men the state has never been generous with Winthrop College. For the permanent plant shtf has appropriated during the thirty-six years of the life of the college only a liUle more than $700,000. She has been appropriating for men at the University for more than a hundred years, for men at the Citadel?with some years n interruption?since 1842, and for men at Clemson since 1890. In the past three years there has been appropriated for one of these men's institutions $1)00,000 for a new home, almost $200,000 more than the sum total appropriated during the entire life of I Winthrop for permanent improve ments. The men were given none too. much. The Winthrop daughters of the state rejoice in the development of state institutions for their brothers. But why the discrimination when appropriating for the great institution established for the higher education of women? Why appropriate more than three times as much for men as for women? Why refusq to appropriate money for new < ojwiinrs at Winthrop where 182 more students are enrolled this year than last, and where practically as many students are enrolled as in all three of our men's institutions, and not-! withstanding the refusal made Win-! throp, appropriate several thousand dollars for new teachers in a man's institution ? Why refuse to equalize the salaries of men and women at "Winthrop because it would mean an increase in salaries for the women, and then turn around and vote money to increase the salaries of men in some of our state institutions? Why refuse to continue the construction of a teachers' home at Winthrop, thus forcing about fifty or more women to secure boarding places out fn 1 own?a morit difficult and oxpensive thing to do anywhere in the state?yet, having refused this, vote $200,000 to continue construction at one of oui men's institutions and $02,000 for repairs at another? Why j exempt a man'." institution rrom turn ing in its fees and require Withrop to turn in hers? The thing that 7000 Winthrop dau?'htors do not understand is the discrimination.
