NEGRO MURDERER
AT LARGE
Sheriff Visits the Territory
and Returns Without

Up to Saturday noon nothing definite
took place about tlie capture of
the negro, Brown, charged with the
killing of two women in Socastee
township, except the bringing in of a
report that the fugitive was supposed
to have been seen, also tracks leading
down to Collins Creek and signs near
a tree, where somebody had stopped
and whittled on a stick with >? knife.
Sheriff J. A. Lewis went down there
last Friday afternoon but returned to
Conway without any results.
It appears that the negro is still
out hiding in the swamps near the
beach; it is believed that as avenues
of escape are constantly guarded the
negro will have to come out and surrender
to the authorities.

Only One Mistrial Declared by
Court on Disagreement
of Jury.
The court of common pleas last
week was a remarkable court in
some respects.
For one thing it had more cases
set for trial on the roster \than ever
before at a court in this county.
The roster is a list of cases made
up at a bar meeting ;beforehand, it
being the intention thereby to fix
thereon th ecases that will be tried
and eliminate from the work of
preparation, those cases that the attorneys
agree are not ready for
trial.
This time the ba-r meeting took
place two weeks before the court
convened, and on the list of cases
to b etried there appeared a total
of sixxty-nine.
It was remarkable in that a majority
of these cases had been on
the docket for trial a number of
years, with the possible exception of
a few which were docketed early
in 1920, about one year ago; and
possibly one or two later than that:
And yet the attorneys who had
placed all these Jong standing cases
on the roster, were apparently unprepared
to go into them when they
were called in the court. In numbers
of thes ecases ont* side would announce
ready to try, and the other
side would claim that it was not
rea<iy. Many times the court showed
its impatience with these tactics.
On several occasions while the court
was going on from day to day, the
judge seemed to be on the point of
(adjourning the court and going
home.
It was further remarkable in that
the great majority of these cases
were suits for the recovery of com
paratvely small sums of money.
The verdicts rendered ranged from
as low as $50.00 up to as high as
$1000.00; hut the thousand dollar
verdict was 'the only one of that
large a sum.
It was remarkable in that much
less interest was manifested by
those who had brought cases in the
court. In times past men would

to be reached. It was not so this <
time to any great extent. In some
cases men who were thought to be
anxious for a trinl to take place, deliberately
remained away, at their
homes or at their business place, and
they let the cases go by the board.
There was but one mistrial in the
Whole lot of cases tried, and that
was in the tfase of John T., Floyd
against Win. Page. The Attorneys
for the plaintiff in this case feel

when it comes up for trial again at
a future term of the court. The
facts were detailed as related by the
witnesses in our last issue.
Upon the whole the cases tried
were not as important as they have
been at several terms in the recent
past
