township the middle of last week to
survey a tract of land under orders
of court. The cases in which he made
the surveys are supposed to cortlfe up
for trial this week.

this world will gain by publicity of

There is no case more troublesome
to both lawyer and layman than the
suits which arise when landlord and
tenant, or landowner and share cropper,
fall out and dispute and decide
to go to the courts. They are also
expensive td both sides in the litigation,
and the suits hardly ever result

A bridge across the Pee Dee River
not far from,Jordanville would be a
great business puller for Conway. In
the course of time we are hoping for
a good, hard highway out in that direction
and a fine bridge across the
river at that point

On account of the president's absence
there was no meeting of the
Civic League during October, but the
regular November meeting will be
held at the Town Hall on Wednesday
afternoon, November 2, from 4
to 6 o'clock.
Farmers will do well to heed the
advice that is being given them by
experts about the housing and care of
sweet potatoes; and especially the advice
about cleaning out the storage
house before placing the new crop
therein.

The clerk of the court had the court
room and stairwavs leading' thereto
thoroughly scoured out and cleansed j
last week in readiness for the crowds
that he knew would visit the court |
house this week while the court was
in progress.
H. Werblun of the Conway Department
Store spent some time in Con- (
way last week attending to business
relating to the business here. Mr.!
Werblun lives in Florence, but he has
stores at Florence and at Loiis in this
county.

docket judging by the roster of cases;
published in a recent issue of this
paper when lawyers listed cases for
trial that they only hoped could be;
tried, owing to the great number waiting
for decision and the limited time
in which to trv them out.

L. A. Permenten left here last week
to visit the markets in the interest
of his firm, the Gents' Furnishing
Company. He will attend to various j
business matters with wholesale
houses in the matter of the purchase
of new lots of merchandise for the
large stock they are keeping always
supplied in their Main street store.

The manager of the bus line out of
Conway, it is said, will soon start a
freight-carrying system that will be
a great convenience to the people
along the route. His advertisement
will appear in this paper when the
plans have fully matured.

The new cottages of W. B. Chestnut
are now almost completed. They are
three in number and erected in a row
on the portion of Third avenue which
leads off into the new Georgetown
road, and they make a handsome appearance
in that section of the town.
Some of the homes were occupied last
week.

The city water is still being put
into new peaces where it has not fcepn

use of the city water system without
being unduly forced to do it by the
ordinance. This 13 the better way of
doin# ft as it will be less trouble and
less expense to the taxpayers.

Follows a more accurate account
of the shooting of Van B. Tube
ville, by a negro, Josh Brown, near
Socastee on last Thursday evening
about sunset.
This account of the dastardly attempt
at the life of a white man.
and the actual killing of two negro
women, apparently without cause;
was obtained from statements made
by the ^wounded man after ho \va
taken to the hospital for treatment.
Mr. Tubbeville was on his way to I
hunt a lot of wild hogs and had a
rifle in the wagon. As he war?
driving along the road he met this
negro, Josh Brown. Brown is ;>
tenant on Tubbeville's place this
year and is in debt to his landlord.
The negro stopped Turbeville and
wanted to know if the latter would
take his crop on the place in settlement
of the debt that he owed him.
This he refused to do and stated that
he wanted the negro to work out his
debt and stay on and gather the
crop. After some conversation, Turbeville
started and drove on. The
negro had his shot gun, and after
T\irbeville had started on. he fired
at him; the load taking effect in the
back and shoulder; the load scattering
apparently and wounding the
man in sixty-two different places.
Turbeville took his rifle from the
wagon and fired at the negro and
thinks he missed him. Then the negro
fired again and missed; then
Turbeville fired another time and the
negro took the woods.
Contrary to the first reports, the
negro not only attempted to lcil! Hwife's
mother, but he killed both hey
and his wife. It is not known
whether he killed thp women before
or after the shooting of Mr. Turbeville.

killed both of the negro women before
he met the white man on tl..

The nfcgro took the woods and aa
late hour on Friday night the
sheriff had not been able to find him
At the landing, on Collins Creek,
where both parties had small boats,
the boat of Mr. Turbeville is 140112.
while that of Brown is still there
It is thought that he escaped in this
boat belonging to the man he thought
he had killed.
The srnall neupo living at the
home of Brown went and informed a
neighbor that Brown had killed his
wife and his wife's mother, and thU
was the first time it was known
that the negro had committed a
double murder as well as tried t
commit a third. ;
All of the wounds of Turbeville
proved to be flesh wounds, none of
the shot entering any vital spot. His
physician said on Friday evening ftmt
the worst danger to his patient was
pneumonia.
On Friday evening a report gained
currency here hat Ben Owens, the
constable at.. Socastee had bee'11
wounded in a fight with the negro
who resisted arrest; but this proved
to be a false report.
The coroner, L. W. Cooper, was
informed of the killing of the two
negro women and went early on Friday
morning to hold inquests. Th*
report of the testimony was taken

in this issue.

Mr. Webb filled this position .for
some time; also represented Mrs.
Lewis in complicated litigation until
a few months ,ago this litigation
was terminated successfully and sat
isfactorily. After the completion of
this business Mr. Webb was away
for a time, but recently returned and
now he is married to the lady from
whom he worked.
