CRUDE STILL
ATTRACTS MEN
?
A crude whiskey still was brought j
in by rural policeman V. 1). Johnson j
early last week from a Bal:er tract of
land near Baybovo or Cool Springs, I
S. C.
It remained for several hours on)
the street and attracted a. number of,
men who wished to look at the crudo
affair.
It consisted of an old gasoline barrel,
with a round hole cut out of the
top, over this fitted an old wash tub
making the cap for the still. The con
denser was made by bending a piece j
of half inch galvanized piping round'
a tree forming a worm and this was!
placed inside of a barrel containing
water to condense the steam.
The inside of the barrel showed
signs of having been used in making
moonshine, and the worm had the >
scent of sour mash.
There is no way to tell who made j
this still and operated the same in vi-1
olation of the laws.

This paper had an article recently *t\
which stated that trouble had arisen q
at Little River concerning the spray v
ing of cattle. It had "been expected < ,
that the requirements would he con- tl
tested-under circumstances that were it
related by A. V. Bessent, who neglect- oi
cd to spray one cow he had in a
field, after having been served with
a Vive days notice by an agent of
Dr. Hedley. It also apcars that one T
other farmer in that community failed
to comply and when he was called
before Magistrate Ward sometime ago ! p
submitted his case to the court when a
Mr. Ward allowed terms with the un- j>del-standing
that the party would en- fj
deavor to comply with the rcgula- C
tions. In the case of A. V. Bessent c
the matter was transferred from 2!
i it tie River to Conway, Mr. Bessent
ays without any grounds, and without
consulting him as to whether it V
would be turned over to' Magistrate
Chestnut or not.
As the other party submitted his
rights to the court at Little River,
M r. Bessent decided last week that
he would spray his cow, because this
was the cheapest way out for him.
He stated that he saw Mr. Chestnut
and Mr. Chestnut had stated that hi
would try to get the fine remitted if
i ho decided to end his case in that
way. The circumstances, however.
trrouniling the Bessent case are
vorthy of mention because it appears
that he had but one cow, and
this he kept within a good fence, get
'ing the cow up for milking each day.
Bessent was unable to see the necessity
of taking the time to either dip
or spra%* this animal under these cir
eumstanceo, or so he says.
