BROADWAY :
HAS CHANGED I
O
r
Movie Shows Have Shoved the
Articulate Actors Into the ?
Side Streets. 81
New York.?The ubiquitous soul
who does his bit toward the settle- i;
ment of world problems by writing: ^
letters to newspapers has been regal- *
in?: New York editors with observa- ?
lions on changes that recent years g
have wrought with Broadway and
life along that thoroughfare. a
Regard, he says, how the movie *
shows have shoved articulate actors
into the side streets. Sec what has "
become of the famous old restau- f
rants. They have gone and uninter- a
esting shoe shops and drug stores ?
have taken their places. The table I
d'hote resorts where dinner and .
laughter and liquor kept patroil? J1
happily ensconced around the tables }
until bedtime are now closing at a
10 o'clock, and even earlier.' The *
good old crowds have vanished, he m
writes. Diners seem to /regard eat- I
5ng as a duty. And it used to bo I
an expreience, not without an oc- I
casional thrill. I
One hotel has done away with its I
jolly hunting room where the boys I
used to get togetner, ana me space n
has been rented to bourgeoistic mer- fl
chants. And those virils chop houses
where banquets robed themselves in
huge white aprons and fraternized
over-juicy beefsteaks are now admitting
women to their tables. Thrt
midnight shows have closed, and the
electric signs lure one only to m
white goods sale, cosmetics, a
movie show or chewing gum.
And the clubs?oh, how they have
changed! The cafe is deserted, the
wags have forgotten how to jest and
make merry. The stewards say they
have as many diners as before, but.
only because men want company at;
dinner. Even the new night time
traffic regulations in the theatre dis
trict have kept the crowds away.
Meanwhile the men who conduct
business in this great hotel, shopping
and theatrical district have
banked together "to help bring about
a fair and proper municipal regulation
of the district which will not be
detrimental to business interests, the
life and happiness of the New Yorker
and the visitor, and to perpetuate
the name and fame of the world's
greatest money-spending center."
Their organization was incorporated
as the Heart of New York Business
men's association, and include those
whose interests are embraced in the I
district between 84th and 59th I
streets, and from Madison to Eighth I
avenues. I

believes would account for the partial
segregation of types as well as
the miscellaneous mixture of animals
found in the quarries.
The Titanotherium, or giant
beast, is the largest animal's bones
to be found in this region. It is
about the size of an elephant. The
most common fossil mammal in the
bad lands of Nebraska is the Dredon?an
herbiviorus animal about
the size of the domestic sheef>. As
many as eight or ten skulls of the
Oredon have been found frequently
in a space no larger than the floor
of an ordinary room.
It has been discovered here by
scientists that America is the home
of the rhinoceros, the camel, as well
as that of the horse and many other
animals now to be found only in
foreign countries or not at all. * Mr.
Cook says that Nebraska is the
home of the rhinoceros and their
wanderings led them into other
parts of the world. At Agate, their
bones and skulls occur in heaps.
He says they became extinct in Nebraska
at the close of pliocene?
half a million years ago.
