DISCOVERY ON
BOLL WEEVILS
(By M. K. Melton.)
A few days ago C. C. French. industrial
Agent for the Fort Worth
Stock Yards, was in my office and
presented the following clipping from
a live stock journal:
"Comanche, Sept. 7.?This section
has one farmer who not only has no
fear of the boll weevil, hut actually
turns it to an advantage. Mis name
is W. B. Starling, and h<' lives near
Blanket, about !0 miles southwest of
Comanche. He says he has now
about a half bale of cotton to the acre
matured, with good prospects of continued
maturity. He has hi> farm
fenced into sub-divisions with hogproof
fences. \s soon as the boll I
weevil begins to make its appearance
ho turns ins HOgS mu> IIUfield.
Ho has about 80 to 3.r> head of
pigs big enough to eat and range,
and tlioso pigs gather every fallen i
form punctuved by the weevil and!
knock off the punctured forms which
still adhere to the stalk. They
actually faten on the larvae thus devoured
and seem to be specially fond
of the combined vegetable and animal
diet.
"In addition to destrovini? the entire
weevil crop, they also loosen up
the soil without the slightest damage
to the plant, in their rigid cleaning
up of the fallen forms. Fields adjoining
or adjacent to his farm whore)
no hogs have been ranged will not'
make enough cotton to pay for the!
picking. Mr. Starling is well known |
as a man of the highest veracity and
integrity and his statement may be!
absolutely depended upon as true."!
In discussing the matter with Mr.
French, he decided to make 'lie trip
to Blanket iinmediatolv for the pur-1

after making a thorough investigation
on September 27th, he reports
the conditions he found somewhat as
follows:
"In an adjoining field consisting *)f
12 acres from 8.r> per cent to 95 per
cent of the bolls were punctured and
the entire 12 acres would not make
more than two bales of cotton. On
the experimental plot of 23 acres
where the hogs were allowed to
range, the cotton will mak** a half
bale to the acre and probably more.
Mr. French st-ates rhat he took up ono
fctalk of cotton with 5'! bolls, no;ie
of which were punctured. The herd
of hogs consisted of three sows, six
gilts and fourteen pig.v. They have
been running in the paten ever since
the first punctured forms have fallen.
"As a further evidence of the value
of the pigs running in the cotton
field, Mr. French found that where
pigs slept at night near the barn and
their watering place, there were practically
no punctured bolls, but in re

time. Th

tnoW parts of the field where the pigs
ranj?k less frequently, the punctures
were more numerous. The cotton
was irt no way damaged by the hogs.
Mr. Starling has been conducting this
experiment for the past six years and
lias found that it has given him uniform
results every year."
1 am passing this information on to
member* of the Better Secretaries
Club, for I believe it is a momentous
discovery duo to the fact that it is
a very hard task to produce hogs at
a profitable price and cotton under
boll weevil conditions.
1 have made arrangements with
two reliable farmers to conduct this
experiment to determine its value in
this section. ? The Southeast Live
Stock.
