The mind should be trained to absorb
and retain facts that the subject
needs to perform to the best advantage
the chosen work of life. Things
not needed in this work will be laid
aside and forgotten, and why? Because
the effort in trying to remember
the things not used would be
wasted.

EXCEL MEANS SUCCESS.
When we say t?4 a mun excels in
anything:, we only mean that he does
i better than some other man we know.
In a sense no man exctfts. It cannot
he done. Hut some moil do better
than others and this is as far as the
matter goes.
Nothing' is perfect. No man can
do anything in an absolutely perfect
manner. For all time, however, man
will strive to do hotter and better and
this is what makes the dilTerence in
men. Nothing else. There is of
course the question of ability, measured
by the amount of brain or experience
that a man had had, but it
all comes back to the original proposition
that each man strives to do a
thing better than the other fellox
and when he succeeds he has excelled
the other in doing that particular
thing.
One feature of success that is lasting
is the ability to do things well
and take care of the tools or machinery
with which the work is done.
Many a costly machine has been sacrificed
to speed mania on the part of
the operator of it and this caused him
to fail in the long run. The same
with the mind when i* is used as the
instrument of operation; and also the
physical powers of the individual.
We must know how to use these instruments
and not only preserve them
but in this case, improve them as the
use continues. As to mere machines
made by man to shorten operations
and increase production, they must be
used with intelligence and care for
their cost is one of the principal items
of expense in performing the work.
It is of the utmost importance that
they be kept in absolutely the best
adjustment, well lubricated, and never
used at a disadvantage. Some of
the machines mad?? by man are al
>st human in their requirements.
They act almost as a man would Go, j
and it only takes a man to supply the
brains for them. The profits they will
turn out depends on the intelligence
and care that is used in their operation.
o
HARD TO ENFORCE.
The passage of nation-wide prohibition
laws was apparently an easy
matter. The enforcement has
brought a problem in reality. The
laws are there. They are strict, and
will be made more strict still. How
will they be enforced and at what
cost? Looking at conditions in New

THE HORRY HERALD, OOM
THEY ARE INVITED.
Race riots conic bccause they are
invited. The white man should
realize that he must live in this
country side by side with the negro.
There is no way to escape it. '1 here
is no need for the lYv.r and trembling
that appears somei^ines. We have
mean white men as well as mean
black men. The government must
and will protect the good against the
bad. It is foolish to act in such a way
that a riot and clash is invited. In
all such cases the law triumphs
quickly but not quick enough to avoid
the damage. The recent riots at
Tulsa were actually invited by the
actions of the Tew white men who
wanted to squeeze a few negroes out
of their lawful rights in oil lands.
These few thought it would be easy
to scare them away, and perhaps they
(lid; but look at the results following.
Such conduct did :iot pay in that cine
and it cannot pay n any other case.
o
The training given in the schools
and colleges is very good for the man
who can succeed without it, and
such training in his case will make
him a bigger success than he would
have been; but for him who has not
|the real qualifications for doing something,
a college education is a waste
of time and money.

FUNNY POTATOES
Mr. P. H. Sasser has raised a fun- '
ny Irish potato plant this year, in '
his garden. Instead of the potatoes
appearing in the ground among the ,
roots of the plant, they formed on (
the stalks and leaves above the
ground. Instead of being white or
red as irish potatoes usually are.
they are green, and here and there
a leaf tried to come out.
It is a strange sight. It was left i
at the Herald office last Friday and
was a matter of interest to several >
people who called and saw it.
