NEW STARCH
. OFJHAWAII
Derived From Heart of Hapu ;
Tree-fern?Novel Light- j
ing Plant.
i *Iv ??
The new starch of Huwaii is de'
rived from the core or heart of the '
Hapu tree-fern, which grows on '
waste land, too hilly or too shallow ,
for tilage crops. The larger of the
two common species (cibotium
menjiest) has a trunk often three
foot in 1 CtA * t. i-li

with erect fronds or leaves adding
12 feet more to the height, i
For starch making, however, the
smaller species (chamissoi) is
i, chiefly used. The fern is cut close
1, > to the ground, and about two feet
of the upper part of the trunk conv
k x taming little starch, is cut off and
replanted, when it will grow into a
i ( new starch-producing tree in 10 o>
IB years. The log obtained, usualI
ly 10 inches in diameter, and six
j feet long, has an outer woodly
' layer three inches thick, with a
starchy heart four inches in
diameter. The starch is washed
nut. with Wlltni' fivini ni'HL'lm.1
mass of the core. One pound of the
dried product is said to equal two
pounds of corn starch for puddings,
custards, etc., and two pounds of
starch for the laundry, while ferntree
arrowroot is claimed to surpass
the best Bermuda arrowroot.
Fences are made from the fibrous
trunks, which send up fronds at
one end, forming a handsomo
sedge.

>uilt up the farm from a poor runiown
cotton plantation to a highly
productive farm. In 1920 he proiuced
45 bales of cotton on 35 acres
>f this land with the use of only 400
rounds of fertilizer per acre.
J no. R. Blair, York County.?There
vlll be six or eight sweet potato
louses built in the county this
ranging in size from 500 to 2500-'
jusliels capacity.
R. H. Lemmons, Fairfield County.?
rhis week I have aided thirty-four
farmers in ordering co-operatively
fifty tons of nitrate of soda. These
farmers saved by ordering co-operatively
$4.00 per ton. I am urging
farmers to give their corn a side application
of nitrate of soda, as the
use of 100 pounds of nitrate of soda
per acre of corn in this county usually
increases the yeild from 75 to
100 per cent.
A. H. Ward, Darlington County.?
This week I have arranged for the
Short Course for Club Boys at Coker
College. This is to be held June 3
and 4. A large number of boys have
expresed their intentions of attending
this meeting. The club boys look forward
with a great deal of pleasure
to this short course.
S. W. Epps, Dillon County. ? On
Thursday Mr. Parker, our Extension
Dairyman, was with me and we called
on five of my men that are very much
interested in dairying. One has just
gotten a nice little bunch of cows together
and is now shipping milk.
Three others are planning to get cows
i before the Marion Creamery opens
'up, when they will have a market for
milk. We have gotten quite a number
of nice dairy cows around Lattu
and heifers from our club bulls are
i beginning to come in and this is cansling
a wonderful increase in the interest.
in dairying.
