Horry County
Some interesting things happened
in this County last week concerning
automobiles alleged to have been
stolon in the State of North Carolina.
Nothing can be learned, of
course, concerning the manner in
which the cars wore taken as the authorities
here have reported only
the occurences in this State.
Sheriff James A. Lewis last week,
acted at the request of A. L.
Long, a special constable sent from
Wilmington, North Carolina, lo obtain
the aid of the authorities here
in repossessing the cars. Sheriff
Lewis was (busy at this nearly all of
last week.
When the Sheriff's office was con
suited last Friday a total of five
Ford cars had been found, and tho
farfs so far known in regard to
ea^h of the five, may be slated as
follows:
Car No. 1 This is a Ford Sedan
and was found in tho possession of
Mr. Jason Ward of Wampee, South
Carolina. The Sheriff states that
Mr. Ward does not say fro u whom
he bought the car. This car is
claimed by parties living in Willi
inurton, and they were here last
week and identified 'lie car, and pi o
duced proof of their ownership of
the same. As to t^is <v,r, 1he
Sheriff had legal wiits in his posossion
for taking it, and these were
necessary before the car could be
seized.
Car No. 2 A Ford touring car war
loc.ited in'the po-^o;sion of Sam
Ward, which is claimed by a young
lady in Wilmington, North Carolina.
The Sheriff did not disclose the
name of the lady.
Car No. ."> Another Ford touring
car was found in the po ;session of
M. C. McDowell, formerly in the
posession of a merchant in Wilmington
by the name of W. P. Powell,
the owner of it, and is alleged
to be still. McDowell claims he
bought this car from Jason Ward.
Car No. 4 Still another Ford touring
car was located in the possession
of Nicholas F. Nixon, Jr. Ho
purchased this car from Matthew
Ward. The insurance hfid been paid
on this car and several others ta

the owners of this machine.
Car No. 5 Another Ford car with
a touring top was discovered to
have been changed by taking off the
coupe top that it originally had.
This car with the change above mentioned
was seized in the hands of
Melvin Owens at Myrtle Deach, whtf
says he purchased the car from a
stri nger whose name he did not disclose.
Before the car was located
Mr. Owens, or the former possessor
of the car, had swapped off the
coupe top and had purchased and
placcd on the body the regular touring
top,
Another car is alleged to be in the
hands of some person in Horry Coun
ty, after having been stolen from
an old gentlemen by Ihe name of
Motte, who lives in Wilmington. He
is a poor man and did not own very
much property but did own this car,
which was stolen from him, and he
is aged, has been very much worried
about the loss of the car, and was
mainly responsible for the sending
of Special Constable Long here to
locate his car and the five others
above mentioned.
The Sheriff stated that none of
the other cars, except the one in the
Jason Ward case, has been actually
taken out of the possession of these
people who now have them, but
that he had notified these parties
upon finding the cars in their pysession,
that they must not part with
the machines, but hold them subject
to his orders, and that he would
have the owners come and identify

numbers or other means of identifi-|
cation which has already been proved
out, and they were also left forj
the further purpose of having tlieiu
t;iken care of until the owners could
take them away, and ho stated that
all of the cars would be seized and
returned to their owners.

Governor Cooper is planning a
trip to Andrews, Georgetown coungrassers
and the stock law people
' of that section, and also enjoy a
fish fry. The governor is invited'
to go to Andrews Wednesday to hear
the people there discuss both pro
and con the bill by Representative

operation of the treneral stock law
in Georgetown and Williamsburg
counties.
Governor Cooper has had this bill
under consideration for some time
and promised both sides a hearing

Americus, Ga.?No development in
criminal history of the South in
recent years has created as profound
an impression in Americus as the
conviction of Edmund D. Bigham at
Florence, S. C., of the murder of
his mother, sister, brother and two
adopted children of his sister.
Bigham, a former resident of Leslie,
near Americus, came here from
that place with Walter Wade only J
a few hours before Wade disappeared
on the nig'ht of August 17,
1917. His body was found a week
later in Flint river, with two bullet
holes in his back and his pockets
turned wrong side out.
Was Last Person With Wade.
Bigham was the last person seen
with Wade, and though he was never
indicted in connection with the case,!
was questioned closely and for a
long time was under surveillance. It
was known that Bigham and Wade!
had some personal disagreement
when Bigham lived in the Wade)
household before the latter's disap- ]
pearance, and this first laid the
linger of suspicion upon him.

and Warren 1. Johnson, both now J
serving life sentences for the murder
of Wade, have since learned
that Bigham called at the home of
a well-known resident of Americus
about the time of the murder late
at night, being unable to satisfactorily
explain his presence there,
lie also employed W. 13. Compton,
a taxi driver, about the same time,
friends of Chapman say, to drive
him into the country, and after
driving some distance in the direction
of Flint river, asked Compton to
drive him back to Americus, without
explaining his reason for changing i
his mind, this being action interpre-1
ted by Chapman's friends as show-1
ing that ho wanted to visit the scene
where he had disposed of Wade's
body, as well as establish an alibi, j
Sentiment is Changing.
These facts, added to the complete
absence of motive as shown in the
testimony of Mrs. Yertie Howell at
the several trials of the case here,
have inclined manv who formerlv
held Dr. Chapman and the others
indicted to be guilty, to now suspect
Bigham, since he killed his entire
family with robbery as his
proven motive.
While here Bigham was always
of a morose disposition, and regarded
by many as queer. It is
believed here now that he is a
paranoiac and that he may have
killed not only Wade, who had a
(considerable sum of money with him
when he disappeared, but also the
members of his family for whose
ir.urdor be h?:s just been convicted,
I while in an insane state.
Chapman's Mother to Face Bigiiani.
Miss Emma Chapman, a sister of
Dr. Charles K. Chapman, wrote
Bighum following his arrest in Florence
a month ago, appealing to him
to "tell all you know of this terrible
murded and help us to establish
the innocence of my brother, who
we know is innocent of the crime
for which he has been convicted."
But she has received no response
from him as yet. A similar letter
written to the jailor at Florence remains
unanswered, and the Chapman
family now has under advisement
the question of having the aged
mother of Dr. Chapman visit Bigham
and appeal to him in his Carolina
'prison to tell the truth" about
the Wade murder case.
A well known citizen of Americus
who was visiting in Greenville,
S. C., last summer, talked with an
aunt of Bigham's wife, who told him
that the family objected strenuously
to Bigham marrying her niece to
no avail, because an uncle of Bigham's
had killed his wife, alleging
that he mistook her for a "ghost"
walking in their home at night, and

the killing was a plain murder. Evidence
tending to show the elder Biffham
had paid a nepro $200 to kill
his wife was in possession of the
family, she said, though ho had
never been convicted of the crime.
It has also become known that
special prosecutors employed by
relatives of Wade, following the
murder, have been dismissed, but
whether this was due to developments
in the famous case since the
conviction of Di*. Chapman and Warren
Johnson, or to other reasons,
could not be learned.
