Nowadays when the hungry population cries for bread the people who possess cake tell the populace to stay hungry. And they close their shutters or they proceed to supply them with cake which they can eat. Elinor Glyn has discovered a curious custom in Spain, which shei describes luminously in her "Spain the Spectacular" in the current num?| ii ui une uosmooplitan Magazine. Spain has beggars, and once a year these beggars arc fed by the king in what she calls a gargantuan feast. This is what she .says of the feast: "About twenty-four courses! The plates were really deep, round dishes, containing such things as half a huge salmon, solese, meats, 1 potatoes, and stuffed artichokes and beans and quantities of other things and puddings and big jars of olives, and one course was composed of whole Dutch cheeses. "When these were going round the king dropped one, it was scrambl ed for by the grandees, to the delight of the crowd. 1 wondered if His Magesty had done it on purpose, he had such a delicious twinkle in his eye, and he looked up and laughed with the people. They adore him!" They say that the beggars of Spain are very happy. It may be the sun of Spain that makes them, happy, but on the other hand, it may be the satisfaction of the stomach which keeps them satified and gay. Woodrow Wilson left the White House last Friday to resume the role of a private citizen and again take up the practice of law?a profession in which he has not been active for forty years. With Bainbridge Colby, the retiring secretary of state, the retiring president has formed a partnership and the new firm will maintain offices in Ne v York and Washington. Mr. Wilson's i?nno,.vicerient thai he would take up the law acrani came as a surprise \o a'l Washington, \Mii"h had been led to believe that for the next few months at least he would go in for a life of r:sst ai d recreat ion rnd then probably pursue, in s?me unannounced way his work for world peace. It was thou^nt, too. that the outgoing president would take up the business of literature which he left off when he quit the presidency of Princeton University to enter politics and become governor of New Jersey. Frail in health, with his body racked by eighteen months of illness, it had been supposed by Mr. Wilson's closest friends that he planned nothing else but rest. But, Rear Admiral Grayson, his personal physician, says he is able to take up legal work and could even possibly appear before the Supreme Court of the United .States, to which the retiring president will soon | make application to practice. The second Democratic president since Andrew Jackson to fill two successive terms, Mr. Wilson's eight years in the White House carried him through the range of human emotions. He was blindly idolized and cordially hated. Eight years of it whitened his hair, racked his frame and impaired his physical vigor, but did not rust his mind. Characterized by his friends as much a wounded veteran of the world war as if he had been shot in battle, he goes back to private life regarded by his partisans as a living sacrifice to his ideals. -o How's This? A lot of reels arrived by express early in the week and it was natural to suppose that these were the ones fixed for the Monday attraction. They were not taken out of the shipping cases and examined until the show was ready to run and tho nofvAno the theatre, to a large extent, were already in the building waiting for the show to begin. It was then discovered that the film exchange had sent out an entirely different picture on Sunday and that the films of "Treasure Island" had failed to come. It was then too late to make any explanation to the audience that would have been satisfactory. Such things are to be regretted. From the expressions of regret heard from the management of the theatre, it is certain that no one regretted the occurrence more than they. o iinnnv nniiii-r*# i nurmi uuunn g g TRUST COMPANY | S3 Real Estate m L. Chiggers are quite troublesome in the Southern- and Central States. They breed in the tall grass and are usuallly most plentful in low-lying land. They attack fowls and chicks that are on the range, attaching to the skin, causing an intense itching. Absesses a third of an inch in diameter often may be found where clusters of these red bugs are feeding and as a result the hivd? w?fna? to cat, become weak and droopy and soon die from hunger, and exhaustion. Fowls or chicks that have been attacked by chiggers or red bugs, if discovered before abscesses are formed on the skin, should have the inflamed parts treated with sulphur ointment, or a mixture of oiv part kerosene and three parts melted lard. If puss has already formed in the ! sore, remove the scab and wash the sore with a four per cent solution of carbolic acid and water. In sections , j where red bugs are plentiful, if the fowls have free range, the grass should be kept short to prevent the bugs from breeding; also dust the birds occasionally with flowers of sulphur, rubbing it well into the feathers. The chicks should be hatched as early as possible, so that when hot weather comes on, when these bugs are most troublesome, the chicks will be old enough to resist their attacks.
