KERNEI/GRIT DOES IT.
Would you lose time in trying to (
clean your hands by washing them (
several times with slick soap that
will not even at last remove the
grease and grime? There is no longer
any use in you doing that. Conway
Publishing Company is the dis- |
tributor of Kernelgrit, the new in- i
vention of the world war. It is noth
ing but soap, but by a chemical process
it is formed into kernel liko
particles which when first applied to
the hands and rubbed over them as
a paste cuts the dirt and grease
away, and then when more water is
applied it lathers as well as most of
the toilet soap in common use.

When u medical student has received
his diploma, und has been pronounced
lit to go out iuto the world und doctor
ailing humanity, or take oft a leg or
ah arm, his struggles have Just commenced.
He has little or no money.
He must have an oilice, and he must
have patients.
Geoffrey ltandolf had his diploma
and had his oflice, but he lacked the
patients. Ills oilice was the front
room of the boarding house. It didn't
have any oriental rugs, nor marble
fireplaces, but it had to do. The main
thing was the sign beside the front
door. It announced that Geoffrey llandolf
was a physician and surgeon, and
that his oilice hours were so and so.
When that sign was in place the graduate
had done all he could do.
A sudden wave of health seemed to
spread over the city, and day after
day, and week after week, Doctor llandolf
sat In his oilice biting Lis fingernails,
or walked the streets. lie was
out walking one day almost in hopes
that a street car might run over somebody
and give him a job at surgical
work, when an auto drove up to the
curbstone, near which it had halted
lor u moment, a nanusome young
lady bo^an rather hurriedly to descend.
Her skirls seemed to eateli in
the door in sueli a way that she would
have fallen face downward on the
sidewalk but for the doctor. It' he
had let her full there would have been
a patient for him, but he didn't let
that thought hold him back. He
sprang forward and caught her in his
anas, saved her from a bad fall, and
received the nicest: kind of smile and a
few grateful words as his reward. Of
course, these wouldn't pay his board
bill and his office rent, but still he felt
a warm gl6w in his heart as he moved
on.
Such incidents luippen every day in
the city, and I)ocU>r Kamlolf soon almost
forgot it. Perhaps it was so with
May Rogers, the young lady in question,
bul it cannot be vouched for.
During the next two-weeks the doctor
had one patient. She'was an old woman
who was deaf in one ear. She had
been so for twenty-wven years, but, as
a new doctor had come into the neighborhood,
she thought he might effect a
cure. The ear was examined and no
help could be extended, and there was
no money to pay. After the patient
had gone the,'doctor went out for one
of his usual walks. Ilis foot carried
him into therpark, and he hadn't gone

things. There was a nice young
lady seated on a bench feeding the
squirrels, and there was a pair of
runaway horses coming along the
j drive at a furious pace. There was
a chance and a pretty even one that
they would cross from the drive to
the path, and that the young lady
would he in danger. The doctor forgot
the old woman with, the deaf ear,
ran forward, and seized the young
lady by tlie arm and dragged her thirty
feet awny. She cried out In alarm,
but he did not heed her. The runaway
horses left the drive, and cut
across the green, and. the way they
made splinters of the l)cnch and ran
the squirrels up the trees was a sight
to see*
May" ltogcrs saw lit?for* It was May
?and realized the danger she had so
closely escaped. With her breath coming
in gasps, she murmured her
thanks, and, when she had more fully i
recovered herself, the doctor had disappeared.
Doctor Raiulolf passed another despairing
two or three weeks. There
was but one ray of sunshine for him in
that time. A child attempted to swallow
a spool of thread, and. he was
called*to extract the spool as it stuck
in the throat. He got it out, all right,
and the grateful mother handed over
the two dollars with a hope that he
might have forty cases before a week
had passed. It was the next day, as
he wandered around to make believe
he was visit lug ipatienits, that an auto
mobile collided with a brick wagon
just across the!street1 from him. The
doctor was over; best die the vehicles in
a few seconds,, and lie helped a halffainting
girl to a plaee. of safety on the
sidewalk. It was the. same May lingers.
She was in a bud nervous state,
and he escorted her to?a near-by drug
store, and gave her something to
steady her nerves. It might have
seemed like taking an undue advantage
to offer his cant, or nsk her name,
and the doctor forbore. She had
scarcely swallowed the powder tho

walked out. Then came a dreary
