A TIME TOR FAITH AND
COURAGE.
Our country has just emerged from
a period of unusual prosperity and
prodigal extravagance and is entering
upon that era of financial depression
and frugal economy which we
have all known must come. The
months just ahead of us will be a
time for faith and courage.
Cause of Depression?A few words
concerning the financial depression.
Roger Babson sayH that the fundamental
cause of depressions is spiritual,
not financial, that in periods of
abnormal prosperity people become
spendthrifts, immoral and non-productive,
working about three hours a
day and charging for eight hours. I
These economic sins caused by moral I
weakness brings on the depression. I

prosperity is spiritual, not financial;
that in times of depression people

day's work for a day's pay. When
this condition exists, he says, a period
of prosperity is just ahead. The
American people are in this condition

Fortunes Made in Periods of Denression?There
is now every reason
for faith and courage. A year aero
the neople needed caution; now they

they are gettinnr on a solid granite
foundation. Strange to sav, the
foundations of many trreat fortunes
in this country were laid in times of
depression, by strong men acting on
Pothcchild's axiom: "The time to
huv is when everyone wants to sell."

for his fortune in the panic, of 1873

Carnegie's early partners in the
steel industry deserted the shin when
it seemed to be sinkiner; with faith

and stuck to the bridge. The sea
calmed and then it was easy sailing
for Andrew.
John D. Rockefeller, in times of
stress and stormy faith and courage
became stronger. He^'picked up his
biggest bargains in oil stock in
periods of acute depression when oil
was unnrofitable. When others ran
awav Rockefeller remained to buy.
When Union Pacific stock was selling
for a song and all others thought
the road a bankrupt, delapidat.ed
property, Ha trim an bought heavily,
and when twelve ve*rs later he died,
he left about $100,000,000 as an evidence
of his faith.
Many of the vast fortunes of
America are monuments to courage
and faith in periods of depression.
There never was a time when faith
in the immediate future of American
