C. * REPLIES TO THE MARION POET Editor Herald: In an issue of the Herald, dated February 10th, I read an article in the half-style of a poem purported to have been written by "Some One in Marion," who finally gave his initials as E. F. L., and in the article he displays a most remarkable type of assiduity trying to be South Carolina's most distinguished poet, but the public eye can readily sec that his standard is far from being able to cope with our origina: ;Haype, .Simms, and Timrod, as he is very slow on composition that he could not stand underneath th? flames of a burning city and maintain a nerve to write absorbing poems about the fleeting stately property that yielded anxiously to the impetuous flames. It seems that his whole desire is to imprint in the minds of the reading public that Horry people condescend to a lower standard than even the uncivilized natives of some Jar away Tortugas, and in order to get a little subject home where he can apply his shallow and unemployed thinking apparatus, he jumps velieni ently upon a trinity of the o'possum, the coon and the persimmon, which prosper in the much envied (by Marionites), but beautiful swamps and hedges of Horry. He refers to citizens in the lowly attitude "searching for coons and 'possoms from Loris to Conway, and very near owned the truth about E. F. L., himself as he without doubt referred to the man, who caught several of the "Poor Sams" on a line between T.rv.-is rmd Comvay and carelessly entered a noted city in Marion Countv, with his goods displayed open to the public, just such public a:; he could meet over there and thev being so anxiou* for fresh meat they all rushed withthe vehemence of a cannibal to the-' scene of the temporary Horry Fresh market and bid high on the Horry product (possums, etc.) but this boy came back te Horry well pleased with a handsome check with E. F. L. signed at the last line, and it was paid they all say. I wonder too if E. F. L. was the gentleman who bought the Horrv Coon from the Ho rv Stock Law Man who, while traveling through Hlack Creek on his way to Mull ins, and seeing a coon, yes a full fledged ring-tail, cross the road he released the duty about which he was engaged and cnu^ht the ringtail on foot and carried him away to Mullins (hide and alM and found a ready market with the E. F. L.'s at the Marion town. You s^e the coon was fraid to climb as it was only a few miles to Mullins and they might see him up a tree, and he realized that Mullins and Marion County chasers were even worse to evade than the harmless Horry citizen who traveled that Black Cree'c rond. Now with this mneh said it is no* necessary to refer further to F. F. L.'s class, but in spite of his dwelling so long on these frivolous subi ill nl'Hpv tn lM'xr ViAmn on?V? *- I small ^argument. if you read between the line you will see the idea that he tries to convey, it is that longdrawn feeling that they wish to express. but are afraid to exore? opam lv. that Marion people- try to cultivate an abominable dignity that! the people of that county are fro?-- I fifty to seventy-five per cent better grade of human beings than the average Horry people. It is a custom with the business men over there to attenv"^ to conv"' the idea that Marion folk do not maintain this contemptible feeling toward Horry, but it is nevertheless manifest, and it is useless for them to disclaim the origin of such feeling. However we are Had that the stock law matter seems to be at a point of settlement, and tho author of the article above referred to may 1 as well be assured that he and the other more distinguished citizens of Marion will never have the pleasure, in our opinion, of welcoming a part I of Horry and its flourishing ter>*i tory of coons and possums, within its borders, tho hope that so many over there cherish. T do not understand what motive created this contemptible sentiment which Margin county ever entertains against Horry, but we are glad of several things that go to make Horry the peer of her distinguished sister county. I heard a lady whose; name 1 did not ? know, stp*? the other day that one town in Marion ^ was not a suitable boarding plac* for people who go to business places f. to carry out vocational work such aj? j teaching, which requires constant ? close connection, and strict application to business, and that ^t. mnit. ho ^ I because there are so many indepen^ dent loafers there, and they were so .frequent that she asked some one in p.town what all tho idle ladies and I men were doing on the streets; thai ?;they must be running transfers. It is to be regretted that Marion main ^ tains this attitude toward Horry bu: ^ nevertheless it is true and it is no: known wh"n such condit'on<? will tef minate. Horry is now looking forth to a period of marked progress, and ?!she will not in the middle of the 'hopeful* fight appreciate any slang, * 'or accept any of those half-blind?(i f. ?r, ...... Long live the Independent liepublic! I am glad the fruitful persimmon trees will be turned out where Marion ca;? fret her share of tho much coveted fruit, and this is sufficient confession that I am, and ever have been, an ardent supporter of the Stock law.
