THE COUNTY AI DITOK.
From year to year the people are
getting more careless in regards to !
making their tax returns to the county
auditor within the required time
fixed by law.
The law requires that the returns j
be made from January 1st to Febru- i
ary 20th of each year. The law also !
requires me to make a canvass of'
the county for the convenience of the
people in making their returns, which j
I do at a great expense to myself. 1
The people in many sections of the
county pay very little attention to
my notice, and at many places 1 am
met by very few of them. Mv office
is also kept open during this time, i
but very few returns are made. Now 1
I am being criticized for not having!
the tax books ready by October 15th, |
as the law requires, and the people 1
themselves are to a great extent responsible
for this delay,. To enforce (
the law for the time of paying taxes!
means that 1 must enfo.ro the law i
in regards to making the returns, i
If not providentially hindered, I
expect to have the utx books ready
for the collection of taxes by October
15th next. Now, when the 20th
of February is past, don't a>-!c me to
take your returns, but pay the penalty
and blame no one but yourself.
You have had your time provided by
law, and I must have my time.
Due to unfavorable weather, I was
unable to fill all my engagements in
Floyds township and the people are
hereby notified that 1 will be at
Stevens X Roads Wednesday, February
16th, from 10 to 11 o'clock;
Floyds School House from 1 to 3.

The next session of the Court of;
General Sessions for Horry county;
will convene at Conway on Monday
March 7, instead of in February, j
The first term of the Criminal i
Court for this county was formerly j
held on the last Monday in February, j
but at the session of the Legislature!
in 1920 this was changed so that the1
first term of the court will be^ held
on the first Monday in March.
Jurors and witnesses and parties in
criminal cases will not have to come
to court in February.

SOCIAL AFFAIR
Banquet Held at Hotel Grace
Last Friday Evening?Several
Speakers.
The local Iodide, Knights of Pythias,
celebrating a recent decided
growth of the lodge by the addition
of twenty members, tendered a reception

of the Order, their wives and a number
of invited quests, at the Grace
Hotel on Friday evening* last.
The occasion was a brilliant affair,
and was attended by upwards of one
hundred and fifty people.
Former Senator Hal L. Buck, the
present Chancellor Commander of
the Lorge, acted as toast master, and
during1 the evening, in addition to the
elaborate spread, the occasion was
enlivened by the presence of a number
of well known speakers, as well
as quartettes and song service.
After the singing of "America" by
the entire assemblage, and the rendering*
of several selections by the
quartette composed of Messrs. John
Emory Watson, C. S. Deitz, L. I).
Magrath and Dr. .J. S. Dusenbury,
the address of welcome was very
happily delivered by Mr. M. A.
Wright, a promising young attorney
of the Conway bar, who is keeper of |
records and seals of the local lodge.
This was very fittingly responded to ,
by Rev. J. C. Atkinson, the pastor of
the Conway Methodist church.
Hon. Robert B. Scarborough, one of
the charter members of the lodge,
and one of Ilorry's most prominent j
citizens, delightfully entertained the
assemblage in a magnificent speech,
punctuated with a number of personal
reminiscences and bits of Horry;

coming to Horry. This was Mr.
Scarborough's first appearance in a
public speech in Horry since prior to
the war, and was greatly enjoyed by
11 present.
The toast master introduced as the
last speaker of the evening, Mr. J. M.
Lynch, a prominent young attorney
of Florence, who delivered a masterful
address on fraternal ism in its relations
to our reconstruction period, |
and the problems growing out of the
late war. Mr. Lynch is a polished
speaker, and made many warm |
friends in Horry during the late war,
in the assistance he rendered the I
Council of Defense of the county in j
the many rallies instituted during the1
war.
The occasion was all the more en- {
joyable because of the presence at \
tho banquet table of most of the el^
